Dude every youtube reviewer/publication has said not to bother overclocking the chips, it yields little to no performance.

Overclocking infinity fabric and the memory, plus overclocking is for me worth it. 15-20% faster in some scenarios.

I overclocking everything, that is my hobby :D

Despite all the silly jokes and memes, 9900K is a beast.

Yes but the slides you posted seems to talk of an all core overclock at 4.3 and then comparing with a 9900k with an all core overclock in games.

Benching games looks like is smarter to leave the proc at default with core clocks.
Infinity fabric and mem of course can yeld better results.

We have to wait for 1.0.0.4. to fix PBO anyway supposedly.

Not bitching at all, but these benches are all at 1080p ?

I'd give the 9900K/KS the title of best 1080p chip. No probs.

Where'd you hear that from, i'm interested ?

Still waiting for the 1.0.0.3 ABB Bios, going to be setting up my system with the 1.0.0.3 AB this weekend.

They're probably binned, but not silicon lottery winners. This is most likely 5GHz all-core boost clocks, meaning, the CPU is going to throttle down as soon as it's getting too hot or unstable. This is different from your 5GHz overclock, since you're basically telling the whole CPU to force itself to that speed. You have to use higher voltages (and in turn, a beefier cooler) in order to maintain that speed with stability.

Yeah, seems to me overclocking the IF is worthwhile, but the cores, not so much. Now that the IF is decoupled from RAM, it seems having very high RAM speeds isn't all that important anymore like with previous generations of Zen.

1440p is the new 1080p with 2080ti and next gen GPU's. Then you will see the same differenses. In some games, it's cpubound in 3440x1440.

    I'm not a brand fanboy, I'm a performance fanboy.

I don't care about brand or color, only performance.

@schmidtbag The 9900k was already what Intel calls a thin bin meaning very few chips qualify. I can't imagine what this 9900KS will be percentage wise but it's likely something silly like less than 1/2 of 1% of the chips qualify. The 9900KS is going to be one of those halo products that Intel cant make very many of so pricing will be very high but at least they can say they are faster than AMD. I do think towards the end of this year AMD will do a thin bin 8-core and make something like a 3850x that has higher base and boost clocks but likely only after they have enough EPYC chips produced. The beauty of AMD's approach is that all of the chiplets are the same across the desktop, hedt, and enterprise lines so if they want to do a thin bin they can easily do it.

It makes sense to bench at 1080p. You remove most of the gpu bottleneck and it's still a highly popular resolution specially for people loving high fps. It's what 2k will likely look like 3-5 years from now and lot of people keep their cpu for at least 3 years.

9900k is the best gaming cpu money can buy. I mean even if you love AMD you can't deny that. Productivity that's another story. This said it's still a very expensive cpu outside of USA. In canada it's currently 639$ (on sale). That's a lot of money for a cpu more than most are willing to pay for sure. Then you have the 9700k at 500$ (on sale) and the 3700x at 460$ (regular price).

If you got the money for the 9900k i think it's the obvious choice unless you are looking purely for a workstation cpu. If you don't then you have to decide if you are fine with buying a 8 threads cpu with 2020 and the next gen consoles around the corner (which should likely have 16 threads cpu).

I understand, but does 5 10 or 15 fps over 100+ fps worth the need for constant bios updates ME patches and drivers and performance loss, no M.2 4.0 support and oh yeah 4 less cores and 8 less threads then the 3900x. I purchased the 9900k if I could trade it today for the 3900x I would in a heartbeat. I have a 9900k and Asus Maximus XI Code for sale if anyone is interested.

Both is good cpu's, and both have its advantages.

3900x is a upgrade in Cinebench vs 9900k, but not in many other scenarioes.

In many things 3900x is a sidegrade at best, but a downgrade in programs that take advantage of low latency.

9900k wins in 4k random read@ QD 1 vs 3900x due to lower latency. Adata sx8200pro 1TB tested.

3900x wins in higher sequencial read/write due to pci-e 4.0 IF the m.2 is pci-e 4.0. So if seq read/write is the most important for you, you got an upgrade.

But hey, I bought 9900k in december 2018. Buy 9900k that is Old hardware today is not smart.

Wait for next gen Amd/intel is smarter ;)

I would say if you mostly game yes 10-15 fps does matter anyway in my book it does (ray tracer junkies might disagree).

Personally i work more than i game. I'm an engineer and yeah for some productivity threads do matter and i currently have a Ryzen cpu in my main computer. This said it's questionable whatever those threads will be used in games before the cpu is too old and need to be replaced. But i prefer to have the extra threads for my work.

Historically multiplatform devs like Ubi, Activision, EA, ... develop and optimize for the lowest denominator which is consoles. Next gen consoles will likely have 16 threads so i would not be too confident buying a 8 threads cpu at this point in time even mainly for gaming. But the 9900k(s) will be fine and will stay on top in games for a while unless the 3950 dethrone it but that would surprised me a lot.

Still 9900k is a gamingbeast ;) So what is you're point?
