Exactly what I was thinking!!! Bring on the new TR platform, I can't freaking wait for 64/128 logical cores!!!!

The server platform is where the most innovative ideas are brought and breed. After a while, some things end up on the desktop platform.
AMD just accelerate this process, and gone are the days when only a few selected mortals were able to purchase Xeons with more than 4C/4T.
It is a generalization, for sure there are details than we can debate on, no point in starting an argument.
Amdahl's law is today's status quo.

Anandtech did a preliminary bunch of tests and seemed quite excited about it both on bang and then doubly on bang per buck. Hopefully it will make inroads into the enterprise sector and get some good profits for AMD.

Indeed. "AMD offers you up to 50 to 100% higher performance while offering at a 40% lower price"
    Outstanding AMD!

"why imagine? for me it's reality (ok ,not 7000$ rome, but 800$ used QS xeons)

Thats not even close in terms of performance/connectivity.

It would be useless for maybe 99% of people!

Task manager would look so amazing. Dont worry in a few years time something like this would be useful for most people. ;)

Dude my inner geek squealed out loud when I saw 16 threads on my 2700X and then again when I saw 24 threads on my new 3900X.... I think I would die if I saw 128 threads!!! lol

But, lets be honest, these would suck for gaming with such low clock speeds.

I don't get what's the point with the 8 core ones. They have support for ECC and 4 channel ram but clocks are lower while TDP and price are higher than an equivalent Ryzen

PCIe lanes. Nothing comes anywhere close to what Epyc provides for PCIe lanes, so stuff like high-bandwidth NICs, RAID controllers, and GPUs are what the low-end parts are for. You don't need that much processing power to handle such things. I suppose they could even go to 4 cores but I'm sure if a die has enough defects where only 1/8 of it worked, the whole thing is probably junk.

    EDIT:
I wouldn't be surprised if we see another Quadro/Tesla server using the 8-core Epycs.

Wouldnt be EPYC if they would launch the processor in Rome, as in the city?

It entirely depends on AMD getting partner systems out the gate and in the market. Intel will have an answer for this next year and if customers are waiting 2 quarters or more for AMD partner SKUs to ship/launch then it's basically irrelevant - this has been a problem for AMD in the past but thankfully they've been hiring people from other companies that are experts in turning this kind of stuff around.

I really hope it works out for them because once the gap closes again I don't think AMD is going to get another chance like this.
