so the rtx cards officially are only supported on win10 1709 and higher builds, and the install will fail when attempting on for example win 10 1607, for a few different reasons i'd like to try force installing my rtx 2060 on a win 10 1607 build, haven't googled this much yet but was going to start by asking here, if anyone knows how to do it? using bcdedit or modded drivers etc?

    thanks !

Can't you use a Windows 10 PATCH? Sounds like your trying to use an illegal version of windows?

They changed WDDM iirc so that's why the driver will refuse to install, and probably not work 100% correctly when you try to. Not sure though.

You can try to mod old drivers (suitable for your version of Windows) to work with RTX cards.
You can`t install new drivers into older versions of Windows because of what fantaskarsef said.

what the hell are you talking about? if you dont have a clue probably should not reply :D I have a win10 license, I'd just like to use 1607 for different reasons,

yep thats me :) went ahead and pasted my question there aswell as win-raid and other places, to get as much feedback as possible.

I see, it feels like it should be possible *somehow* but does not seem likely at this point..

I know what you mean by "it feels like it should be possible", truth is, it's not. The way it works is that they changed something in depth about how windows itself is working with drivers, so that's why older drivers haven't been created by NVidia, if I understood that correct. So, no luck there. I too upgraded my windows from LTSB2016 (1607 iirc) to LTSC2018 just to be safe when I got my 2080TI

Of course it is possible. You only need to find the source files of both new and old drivers, then compare them to disable or correct new features in new drivers so that they would fit into old version, then you need to build and sign them, and - voila! - install.

I might be wrong here, thinking about it. What I can tell you definitely is, that if you want to use the latest DX12 libraries, in particular those required for DX-R / RTX usage, one will require a later windows build since the directX components don't install. At least not by themselves via WU, iirc.

    WHOA! Are you saying?

You can't update to latest NVIDIA drivers on windows 10 if your operating system is pirated!!!!

I've been using my pirated copy of Windows 10 x64 Pro since 2016 with AMD cards... latest drivers always installed fine...even thou I have never updated my copy of Windows 10.

But now I finally decide to upgrade to a GTX 1070ti I can't install the latest GTX drivers!

    That totally sucks!

If you have a legit Win7 or 8 key, you can install with that and it will still activate.

Or buy one off Ebay or other sites. I've seen Pro x64 keys for about $16 from sites. Do they work, yes. Why are they so cheap? Because they are using a volume retailer's setup to generate them and register to MS's database. For example, all those stickers with keys you get on your new laptop, they're generated in-house at a cost of about $3 to the manufacturer, and registered via VPN to MS.

So someone with this setup can generate OEM or Retail keys, pay the Volume price to MS to register it, and resell it for lots of profit margin, even at $20 a key. Or they can generate 1000's of keys, and sell them to another vendor who then resells them.

Funny it requires a certain W10 version, but an RTX 2080 works just fine on Windows 7. Ray tracing using Vulkan works fine too. DLSS doesn't work but it's garbage anyway.

the windows 10 versioning is subject to hardware validation restrictions, since microsoft only support the windows versions 18 months thats as far back as you can validate new hardware for.

That's a perfectly good excuse if excuses are enough. Otherwise they could validate the driver for the LTS-B/C builds which are still supported by MS (and I assume the same unsupported non-LTS builds would probably work too).
I am against using outdated Win10 builds (or even LTSC for gaming and multimedia), etc, I just felt like making that argument.
