AMD is changing its processor-in-a-box retail packaging for the Ryzen 9 series with a more premium design. Retailer PC Part Picker placed a photo of the Ryzen 9 box up-close....

"Ryzen 9 includes also free cooler". While a $2000 Intel CPU, which should have include an AIO (given the price) doesn't even have a $5 T-shirt for the sake of it :D

I would not mind $30 lower price for one w/o cooler. But it will add nice box into my set of nice Ryzen boxes.

I'm not a big fan of amd included cooler: for 2700x if i put the cooler on low using the switch on the side of the cooler the cpu gets hot under full load (80 - 90 degrees on 27 degrees room temperature) and if I flip the switch on high it is very noisy (but cools well) - bought an noctua nh-d15 for amd and it is cool and quiet.

So yes, I would also prefer one without cooler at lower price.

Hopefully they'll also launch heatsink less versions of at least the top models, 30€ off the 3900X would make it even more interesting.

Since AMD's new box coolers are actually decent, I've deliberately kept the ones I've built in PCs so far. If you don't intend to overclock, they're more than good enough. If you take the box cooler from a Ryzen 5 or 7, it makes for a great "free" heatsink for an overclocked Ryzen 3.

Yes, I too prefer my branded packaging containers to show different logos, and perhaps take other shapes, like cylinders, pyramids, or perhaps dodecahedrons.

Anyway the free cooler will stay in it's box most of the time or be sold in ebay (btw the "ultra silent" cooler included in my Athlon GE package was doing more noise than the fan used in the PC :) i bought a passive cooler (19 Euro) and now it is silent. AMD can kept their cooler at AMD house :) )

On high end people prefer a better quality cooler.

I was hoping AMD would make a dodecahedron shaped box for the 12 core part like Intel did with the 9900k. Would be a lovely little jab at Intel hinting that our 12 sided box actually has a 12 core part in it.

IT never rains for everyone's liking.
It's a box, it's free (well, included) and that's that.
IF AMD Ryzen will have an CPU only box, that's a very nifty little advantage regarding buyers with other cooling solutions in mind.

i would gladly take a cpu wrapped in newpaper if that will remove cost of it ! :p if you remove the cooler too that would be 10-15 bucks adding few more bucks and you get the old time classic 212 evo .

Yeah, bring back the good old times when you could buy a tray CPU at a better price from some stores.

ok we must all admit that we all wait for the company that will integrate rgb leg at the side of the heat spreader ! we all know rgb = +100% performance !
