Why not just make a "DisplayPort ∞" standard where there is no bandwidth max? That'll solve all our problems.

Because that wouldn't be a standard.

So they took the 4-lane ThunderBolt3 40GBit/s PHY (does it actually run at PCIe 3.0 x4 rate of 32 Gbit/s, with 8b/10b channel coding overhead?)
    AND
tweaked it to run at 80 Gbit/s (77.57 Gbit/s if you consider 128b/132b channel coding) mode on either the 4-lane DisplayPort 2.0 connector or the 4-lane USB-C connector, which mode I assume will also be implemented as ThunderBolt4/USB5 going forward.

Anyone still afraid of PCIe 6.0?

Preparing pop-corn for those having a resolution over 16K dealing with winapi...
Hint for thos ignoring this: search for D3D11_REQ_TEXTURE2D_U_OR_V_DIMENSION... same apply for D3D12_REQ_TEXTURE2D_U_OR_V_DIMENSION too...

Late next year according to the article. Hopefully it'll end up being sooner.

What about GPUs, I assume that this is a hardware implementation baked into the silicon and instructions.
So Navi will not have it, maybe the next Nvidia or Navi refresh could theoretically have the DO 2.0
Can anyone chime in and share their knowledge about this ?

Best that you read the entire article mate.

"First products incorporating DP 2.0 are projected to appear on the market by late 2020."

The question is also, why put that on a GPU that can't drive said resolution / refresh rate? I honestly doubt we need that bandwidth right now...
I guess at least they think ahead.

We needed higher bandwidth 6 months ago.

Asus pg27uq 4k 144hz is nerfed and my lg950-f is nerfed. 144hz 3440x1440 10 bit is not possible with 4-4-4 "color"

Yes, it was written right there all the time.

Well DP1.4 reached its limit right? the asus 4k 144hz hdr monitor can't run without some form of compression, bit loss or only in SDR mode... With this (and the right gpu) you could run up to 240hz 4k hdr 4:4:4 12 bit with no compression.... I know GPU standards aren't there yet, but 1.4 was limited to 97hz if you wanted to keep 12 bit hdr, 4:4:4 on, which kinda defeated the point of that monitor in my eyes.

Like i get what you're saying but cables have become a bandwidth issue till HDMI2.1 and DP 2.0 comes out, then we should be fine for a bit longer :p least till high refresh rate 8k comes out... but we got a good time before then i reckon

    DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 provides up to 25.92 Gbit/s in HBR3 mode - that should be enough for 24-bit or 30-bit RGB / YCbCr 4:4:4 at 3440x1440@144 Hz with either CVT-R2 timings (24 bit * 782 MHz = 18.77 Gbit/s, 30 bit * 782 MHz = 23.46 Gbit/s) or CVT-RB timings (24 bit * 800 MHz = 19.2 Gbit/s, 30 bit * 800 MHz = 24.0 Gbit/s). For 36-bit color, vertical refresh rate would have to be limited to 130-133 Hz (716-718 MHz pixel clock).
So it's custom display timings set by the display, not the DisplayPort interface by itself.

    HBR3 is only enough for 24-bit color 4K@100Hz (3860x2160) with CVT-R2 timings (24 bit * 887 MHz = 21.29 Gbit/s) - 30-bit color (10 bpc) requires 26.61 Gbit/s, so you'd need to decrease the refresh rate to 96/97 Hz.
Likewise 4K@120Hz and 4K@144 Hz would only be possible with YCbCr 4:2:2 subsampling which reduces the data rate by one third,
4:2:0 which halves the data rate, or with Display Stream Compression (though it is currently supported by select few monitors).
