AMD Ryzen 9 3950X: 16 cores and 32 threads - A Gaming CPU to be released in September

AMD is going better and better.

 

While a great CPU, $750 for a gaming CPU is mental, hell even $500 is too much for a gaming CPU. 3800x is clearly the gaming CPU, everything else is enthusiast, especially when we know that the 9900k will perform better in games at the same price.

 

the 9900k is around 500 too.
The 3800x is a bit less, is around 400 right? and looks like it will perform on par with a 9900k.

I agree that 750 is an enthusiast segment.

 

Hey Boss...does the 3950X come with a nice cooler like the wraith? ....

I think it's a shame that intel/any company would sell a processor without a nice cooler.

 

Regular gamers should get 3700X. Rich/competitive should go for 3800X. Above that 3900X/3950X are for people who have reason to get it. And gaming itself is not that reason. Games themselves will not benefit from 12C/24T+. And even 8C/16T allows for great multitasking without need to worry on what was left running in background.

 

Sure 3700X is good enogh for most of the gamers and its for good price.
I like dat 12core 3900X for same price as 9900k.

 

Come on airbud, tell us again how 9900k is better.

 

I'm still holding out hope for a anniversary edition 3850x high clock speed binned chip. Probably won't happen but since they just did it for the 5700x I know they have thought about doing this for Ryzen.

 

I agree with prior history that is what I have been seeing as well but I do not want to apply that to this generation without testing. I think the gap is going to be so close that it doesn't matter anymore. If AMD is believed they are virtually dead on with Intel's 9900K in CS:GO fps.

 

Gaming CPU maybe for someone who has too much money.

 

Btw boss, do you plan on doing a review of the Wraith cooler to see how well it stacks against the budget options?

AMD sure is pandering hard to the gaming market... Even 12c/24t is overkill.

Until 4c/8t isn't enough to play games at 60FPS, I'm not upgrading. That being said, I do expect that to change by the time next-gen consoles come out.

 

4c/8t are not enough even today. There are quite a few games that can use more than that.

 

I agree, today is best to be looking for 6+ core, ideally 8 core for gaming, even the new consoles will be 8 cores, so matches well for the porting we might see in the near future.

 

For 60FPS, it is in fact enough, at least if you don't play youtube videos in the background or do streaming (I do neither). I have yet to encounter a game that struggles to keep up that framerate. 6c/12t is necessary if you want to reliably go higher than that.

Just because a game can use more cores, doesn't mean you need more cores for a good experience.

 

Should be good for 2030's games as well

 

E3 is a gaming conference--AMD is simply advertising its entire line to these gamers at the show. People who do nothing but game probably run consoles--it's "PC" owners--the people who run games + other software regularly who they are marketing to here. It's like Su said: "AMD loves the PC!"--because that's a market for all of their CPUs, and gamers come in all shapes, sizes, incomes, and ages. I run a 6c/12t cpu now and I'm pushing them all in several games. But I learned how to walk and chew gum a long time ago, so I will--maybe--move up to 8/16. Or I may go with the 95W TDP 6c/12t--at the moment I have the 65W R5 1600 that does 3.8 GHz ROOB with the including 95W TDP fan AMD bundles, and I get a 600Mhz overclock just by setting the multiplier in the bios! I can't do 3.9GHz--doesn't matter about voltage--it's not stable. But 3.8GHz is 24/7, rock solid. So...I'm wondering what I could do with the 95W version of the 6c/12t--buuut...probably will go with the 8/16, anyway. Nice to have such decisions for a change! Unless someone is a console aficionado, one size here certainly doesn't fit all, imo.
