Wow just when I thought there was no where to go with my aging Asus rampage x79 iv black edition motherboard l learnt of the Xeon 1680v2 8c 16t 25mb cache unlocked cpu, just snagged one for $200usd was debating a complete upgrade of cpu, mobo and ram but then I learnt of this cpu option.. Been running a 6 core 4930k at 4.4ghz for the last four years, should be interesting what I can get out of this new cpu?
Let us know how the overlocking went and how much did you get. To be honest those 200$ and saving little more should been better spent on a zen2 upgrade in a few months. Im in a similiar situation but with 3930k.
Just a point: Why on earth go to the Xeon 1680v2 ??? with X79 you can have second hand Xeon E5 2680 V2 around 230$ and even E5 2697 V2 around 300$ that would be better choise? (i don't know about Asus X79 but nearly all X79 accept those CPU)
because the 1680v2 is 8 cores and nearly all are guaranteed to hit 4.2Ghz minimum. the 2680v2 is a 10 core and overclocking it is a pipe dream. You also run into throughput issues as core counts go up which reduces overall processor performance even at the same clock rates.
Yes and no the Xeon E5 16** aren't the only one, depending on X79 board the E5 26** W (the big Xeon with core disabled) have fsb unlocked, same as all ES. My point was that for the price 12c/24t at 3,5Ghz is better than 8c/16t at 3,9Ghz, even more with quad channel memory (that wasn't so much exploited with I7)... If it is for OC then it's a good choise but for future 10, 12 and 15 (if you get hand on it) core Xeon are still better.

Definitely getting my moneys worth from this X79 platform considering what I payed for the Asus Rampage Black edition motherboard and 4930k cpu I've had my fun..and its been rock solid stable since I bought it, But not quite ready to give it up yet.,the 1680 and maybe some faster ram than the 2133mhz I have now.. Then I'm done,! New setup after Xmas
