Turing has been released like 5 months before R VII.
When you're releasing 5 months later, reaching almost the same perf. as the competition is nowhere nearly as good as having that same product 5 months earlier. That's almost half a year for NV - completely unopposed. Of course that's a win terms of time.

I only see one at that price and it's the gigabyte model everyone knows crashes. Eh noo!

R7 is not a real product. it's a leftover Pro card, just to have something for CES.
the availability is non-existent, you can't find them anymore.
R7 is the same architecture as Vega, just like the 580 is a 12nm RX 480 refresh.....
Refresh is not a new product.

Is AMD still selling gpus? I forgot they exist. The whole world is green these months. It's so sad.

Polaris for one, and why not Vega? Vega did what it needed to to, perform against the 1070 and 1080 which it did.

Lol, then my buy last week was grey market sale or so...and store stock said 10+ more, but who knows, maybe y right man...
Maybe it is leftover but my ocing well, runs well, and is less hot and power hungry than Vega 64.

AMD's problem in the GPU segment is the same as it was in the CPU segment (and still partially is, if you look at the server market for example), and in fact is an universal problem for any underdog in any field of business. It's not enough to have a competitive product, they would need a better product to convince the resellers and the masses. Ryzen is better than Intel's offerings in some ways, not all as is seen in game benchmarks, but in some ways most certainly. However, AMD's GPUs aren't really better than Nvidia's in any significant ways. It's hard to replace the market leader if you can't offer something better for the same price. When we are talking about products people will easily use for two or more years and that cost hundreds of euros, small price differences also aren't enough to turn all heads. Many a person will rather keep using what they are used to and shopkeepers keep selling what they are used to if the alternative doesn't make the ground shake.

Polaris... let's see.... the 480 was slower than 1060 at launch. they had some real driver issues at launch while ofc consuming more power.
the 5XX series was actually competitive and did sell very well(best selling GPU from AMD in steam db) but it was basically a later refresh and now AMD has to drop its pricing over and over to keep up with GTX turing.

again dropping prices = not being competitive

When world wide, they talked about few hundreds that's not a real launch. there's a name for it. paper launch.

it's great that you got 1 but on major retail sites the availability is extremely low, very few overpriced models are available.

now check the 2080 availability and see the difference.

Price Performance, simple as that. The 480 also launched at a lower price than the 1060. It does not have to be a new generation to be competitive.

Well pricing wise, the 4GB was 200$ but the full 8GB was 250$ just like the 1060 6GB. in most regions pricing was basically the same at launch.
AMD don't drop the prices because they want to, they drop the prices because they have to.
as I said, AMDs margins are already not great especially for Vega, dropping the prices is admitting defeat to Nvidia.

$239 for the RX 480 with more Vram and freesync at the time.

But how is that admitting defeat? That's staying competitive with pricing to what Nvidia has in their market now.

At some point you have to call it a defeat. Like if AMD dropped the RX480 price to $5 to compete with some insane Nvidia future card would you still say "its just staying competitive?"

There has to be a line somewhere where its like "okay yeah you're kind of "competitive" because you dropped the price of the card significantly and/or it competes with some GPU nvidia/intel/competitive xyz has at half the die size but really your product should be dead/replaced"

I don't know if the RX480 crossed that line yet but it's definitely approaching it. Which is why most people are waiting for Navi.

if you drop your prices to the point that there's almost no profit, you lose.
if you're forced to drop prices on current lineup because you can't keep up with the competition, you lose.

Idk i think rx480/580 ware much better buy than 1060. The fact that nvidia released 1660 to compete with Polaris shows that.

Yes but the 580 now competes with the 1600 series not 1000 series....

no-one needs to buy 3 years old tech and feel good about it. heck 3 years old tech should cost half what it did back then.

MSI Geforce GTX 1660 Ti Ventus XS OC for the win! Uses little power, very quiet, overclocks like a champ, handles any game at 1080p with high settings, and will only get better with future drivers. There is absolutely no point in buying a Vega card.

You underestimate vega56 performance. With a little tweaking card is reaching card is reaching 1080and vega64. Yes, it uses more power but thats a fair trade i would say.

Vega56 can smash 1660ti left and right.

    Nice video :D

Vega did perform well against the 1070 and 1080, sure. But timing-wise it was a disaster, being released over a year later than its competition. AMD lost big time on that, and a big chunk of 290/290x owners got tired of waiting and went to Nvidia.
