hello everyone, just bought G2790PX AOC 144hz monitor with an old 60hz monitor the gpu was idling at 300mhz for gpu and 300mhz for memory connect the new monitor via displayport, set windows10 desktop @144hz, then the memory of the graphic card went up at 2000mhz and of course idling temps of the gpu are raised from about 32 to 48+ degrees found a workaround googling the issue on a nvidia forum where they suggest to set the refresh rate instead to 120hz and it is true, in that way the memory of my RX580 went back to 300mhz they say maybe because 120 is multiple of 60 (?) is it a known problem of windows10/amd driver? it will be fixed? i am doing something wrong? card is a 8GB sapphire pulse
Hmm, I never saw that issue when I switched from 1080p@60Hz to 1440p@144Hz on my RX 480. Are you using both monitors now? Because higher idle clocks is a known effect of running multi-monitor setups. If not I'm afraid I don't know what the issue is.
same there: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/489fmq/will_high_memory_clocks_on_desktop_for_144hz_ever/
240Hz primary screen + 120Hz secondary screen here. Memory of my RX-580 runs 2250MHz on idle. 41°C with custom fan speed for reduced noise (21% duty cycle). And it is known. Same thing happens on older cards too.
It can't be consistent though, as my RX 480 idles @ 300MHz with a 144Hz 1440p monitor attached. It's definitely attached in 144Hz mode too, though I run with FreeSync disabled and maybe that makes a difference?
found this https://community.amd.com/message/2876849 and this https://community.amd.com/message/2884273 seems fixed for vega with new driver (18.11.xxx) maybe it is fixed also for rx580? i'm still with 18.9.3 because i noticed some weeks ago that with 18.10.1 i had some unwanted gpu usage when idle i'm trying to register an account on amd community but weirdly i can't enable the checkbox to accept the policies LOL
Interestingly enough, I have the reverse situation. I never had problems with the memory clock running at 3D clock speeds when connected to a 144Hz monitor. So I changed the refresh rate to 120Hz to test it out, and memory speed gets stuck at 1500MHz. I have to go down to 100Hz for it to downclock. And I have freesync enabled.
other 2: https://community.amd.com/thread/219152# https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/a2nvce/144hz_memory_clock_issue/ is amd aware of that?
So I replaced the MSI R9 390 with a Powercolor RX 580 Red Devil and it's the same. 300MHz at 144Hz and 2000MHz at 120Hz. So from my very scientific sampling of 1, my conclusion is that it depends on the monitor. I've got a Viewsonic XG2401.
