I'm glad they released this, there wasn't quite enough combinations of 1050-1060's. Another 5 or 6 and we shall be sorted.

It's not a horrible idea. At least it's not the same 1060 we get from every other partner. This should actually have some performance difference. Considering there is still no mid level RTX(and if there was, that cost though), or anything from AMD aside from the rumored Polaris refresh, people still want products like this. It's not gonna do 1440p 120hz, but it's not made to do so. 1080p gaming just fine.

People seem to think if it's not RTX or one of the thousand 1080 series then it's unnecessary. Fact is, this price performance point is the most popular.

It would be interesting to know what 2060 would be like, though. If we assume 1070(Ti) and 1080 are phasing out, there's a huge price & power gap between 1060 5X and 2070.

Wait 300$ msrp (probably around 350$ retail) for a refresh of a past generation entry level gpu?

The GPU market needs some competition.

Main speed improvement is probably this one:
    16.7M Customizable Color RGB Lighting
Set it to green for better performance.

"Precise specs, however, are missing, the GDDR5X is listed at 192 GB/s which we hope is a mistake, as that is the same as it was before :)"

OK, what is the likelihood that, on the manufacturer's official website,

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/geforce-gtx-1060/

...the one, single specification that would differentiate this GTX 1060 from the rest of the brood would be inaccurately reported?

Now, I am taking note of the catch-all "GDDR5/X" description, but, I wouldn't be in the least surprised if Nvidia would, in essence, be saying, "Here, have some of that magic GDDR5X!", and leave it clocked at 8GHz if only not to upset their already overly-granular product stack.

Is it me or up-to GTX1070 levels- the AMD is better choice thanks to cheap free-sync monitors?
So the "RX 590" should be better then those 1060 GDDR5X?

Hahahaha, 300$. And some fanboys said they want to clear stocks with the ridiculously high RTX prices. :D

No. The GTX 1060 does not support SLI (anyway, it has an average performance increase of ~50% which is pathetic - same for CF)

Not most popular, most affordable/most purchased (for people wanting higher performance). 1080ti is the most popular 10 series card but most can't justify the cost. Think Nissan Maxima / Nissan GTR.

Popularity=Sales numbers. 1080ti is the most powerful of the Pascal card, Steam charts alone show what is the most used/popular card.

1080 and 1080ti are low on the list.

Glad to see an alternative to the RTX line of video cards , i think the RTX 2060 would be an expensive one. I'm waiting for the Asus ROG Matrix Turbo Strix GT DirectCUII OC Poseidon Platinum Edition GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5X

Pretty sure they said no tensor on x60 type products, so RTX branding is limited to x70 and above. No that this means much since nvidia have been known to create new upper tiers and utilizing the old tier branding assumptions to lead those not in the know (aka the vast majority) into thinking they are buying a better product (with the accompanying price hike) than they are actually buying. #marketing

I would not word it that way. It is not talking as much about popularity of particular card as popularity of nV over AMD.
Cause for 1060 being used so much... It is most common price range where people shop for GPU. And nVidia is more popular of only 2 brands making GPUs in that price range.

It's like with the cars. Different people shop in different price categories. And in each category there are cars from different brands.
Volkswagen can be popular. Price range and popularity does not fit together.
    = = = =
As for that 14.29% which 1060 holds. It says something. And that's: Brand popularity means everything in that market.
You have RX-470/480/570/580 delivering about same performance as different editions of GTX 1060. They have similar or better performance/$ + much more accessible Adaptive Sync implementation.
Yet AMD holds only ~1.5% in that price range.
