AMD's 7nm Navi GPU shines in lab testing

According to a report published by Fudzilla just ahead of the weekend, AMD has 7nm Navi GPU based graphics cards currently in testing in its labs.
If its sources are correct, the tests have been very positive for AMD as the GPU has performed "better than expected".

The above news is already interesting and encouraging but Fudzilla adds some further tasty morsels.
For example it says that the Navi GPU based products will target the mid-range, as a Polaris replacement. In terms of comparisons against known SKUs we will be looking at Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 performance at around the $250 price level.
Such a product/price offering could really reinvigorate the PC gaming market after a long mid-range stalemate which was exacerbated by the crypto-mining boom.

Background details regarding the 7nm Navi GPU include the assertion that it it isn't an MCM but a standard monolithic die design.
However, we don't know specifica about the process, such as if yields are good, or the performance/power consumption benefits delivered by the 7nm manufacturing shrink.

Fudzilla errs on the side of caution to suggest that Navi-based graphics cards will appear in Q3 next year.
That sounds like a Computex launch followed by late summer availability.
However, earlier this month AMD indicated that we might see Navi info/demos at the CES in January 2019.
Of course, sooner would be better for AMD and all those waiting for new products to replace the aging RX 500 series and GTX 10 (up to 1060) series products on the shelves.

Hopefully it's GDDR6 and doesn't need to be water cooled as you say (won't believe it until I see it) but let's keep our fingers crossed.

It would be a steal at $250 and epic for 1080p (not saying that as something derogatory since I prefer to play it that way) with high frames.

    100% is not HBM2 -> GDDR6 is for Lower chip w/Lower TDP
HBM2 will be used with Biger chips to fight space/TDP etc.

AMD Radeon Graphics Update: 7nm Vega Instinct to begin sampling in 2018, Navi architecture in 2019 followed by “Next-Gen” architecture on 7nm+

This roadmap represents a significant change from before which had 12nm Vega shrinks present.
It looks like AMD is going to be skipping a beat as far as the GPU side is concerned and going straight down to 7nm for its GPU lineup.
Die shrinks usually result in big performance and power efficiency gains and its little surprise that AMD wants its entire portfolio to shift to 7nm by 2019, which would allow it to take advantage of significant cost and economy improvements.
The price to pay of course, is going to be the increased difficulty of fabricating on such a tiny node. In fact, this is the the node after which EUV will almost certainly become a requirement.

This means, that we will probably not see any other graphics update from AMD in the entirety of 2018. If the company manages to finalize Vega, we should see it launch sometime before the end of 2018, but even that could get shifted back to Q1 2019.
As for Navi, the new roadmap makes it clear that it is almost certainly a 2019 product – one which will probably come by H2 2019 since it represents a newer architecture on top of the die shrink.

    • The “Vega” product family in 2018 with the Radeon Vega Mobile GPU for ultrathin notebooks.
    • The first 7nm AMD product, a “Vega” based GPU built specifically for machine learning applications.
    • A production-level machine learning software environment with AMD’s MIOpen libraries supporting common machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow and Caffe on the ROCm Open eCosystem platform.
    • The industry’s first fully open heterogeneous software environment, which is making it easier to program using AMD GPUs for high performance compute and deep learning environments.
The company gave a very short – but working – demo for the 7nm as well, showcasing its rendering capability. This is something that will allow it to make headway into the ray tracing market that NVIDIA CUDA currently occupies.
The company also revealed that the card is sampling to partners right now and will be officially launching sometime in the second half of 2018.

You can see the render benchmark demo of the 7nm Vega over here:

The quarterly guidance was the first time this year AMD forecasted sales materially below Wall Street expectations.

Before the results, the chip stock was the No. 1 performer in the entire S&P 500 this year through Wednesday’s close, with a 122% gain.
AMD stock had rallied on rising expectations it will gain market share from Intel due to its increasingly competitive chip technology.

Su is still confident about AMD’s product pipelines for both of its CPU and graphics businesses,
noting a tendency of some investors to myopically focus on short term quarter by quarter results.

We will be “competitive in high-end graphics,” she said. “We’re making high-performing quality products and building a solid long-term foundation.”

AMD "Vega 20" GPU Not Before Late Q1-2019

AMD "Vega 20" is a new GPU based on existing "Vega" graphics architecture, which will be fabbed on the 7 nanometer silicon fabrication process,
and bolstered with up to 32 GB of HBM2 memory across a 4096-bit memory interface that's double the bus-width of "Vega 10."
AMD CEO Lisa Su already exhibited a mock-up of this chip at Computex 2018, with an word that alongside its "Zen 2" based EPYC enterprise processors, "Vega 20" will be the first 7 nm GPU.
AMD could still make good on that word, only don't expect to find one under your tree this Holiday.

According to GamersNexus, the first "Vega 20" products won't launch before the turn of the year, and even in 2019, one can expect product launches till the end of Q1 (before April).
GamersNexus cites reliable sources hinting at the later-than-expected arrival of "Vega 20" as part of refuting alleged "Final Fantasy XV" benchmarks of purported "Vega 20" engineering samples doing rounds on the web.
Lisa Su stressed the importance of data-center GPUs in AMD's Q3-2018 earnings call, which could hint at the possibility of AMD allocating its first "Vega 20" yields to high-margin enterprise brands such as Radeon Pro and Radeon Instinct.

AMD Radeon RX 590 Rumored To Launch on 15th November

Latest rumors for AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 590 have arrived from the Far East. This time, a new launch date and pricing figures of the Polaris refresh graphics card have been put forward.
Based on the rumors, the card is going to be available in the market in the next couple of weeks.

Before getting into the rumor details, the first thing I want to point out is the naming of the new card. The Radeon RX 590 will be the first graphics card since the Radeon R9 300 series to use the Radeon RX *90 series branding.

Since Fiji and Vega GPU architectures, AMD moved their *90 series naming schemes to elusive names such as Radeon R9 Fury X and Radeon RX Vega 64.

The previous flagship names were simple number schemes such as Radeon R9 290X and Radeon R9 390X but to make them sound even cooler, AMD started using more attractive naming schemes.
It looks like the Radeon RX 590 will once again use the same old flagship branding. It also suggests that this will be the flagship Polaris GPU offering.
Previous rumors have hinted that the card will use a 12nm Polaris 30 GPU core with better clocks and efficiency.

There’s no word officially yet but the card will be able to deliver better performance with the same number of stream processors as the Radeon RX 580.
We have got some performance leaks here but coming to the more interesting details that are part of this rumor.
Mydrivers reveals that the card is expected to hit the retail market on 15th November.

Sure I would like a good boost of performance from this card, but I am most interested in is the power efficiency on 7 nm.
This card seems like a betweener and should gave some hints to the following gen (Navi)

Radeon RX 590 featuring FinFET 12nm [IMG]

Two photographs posted by Andreas Schilling, editor at HardwareLuxx, have confirmed the existence of the new Radeon RX 590 graphics card.
The feature list indicates that the new card will be using smaller, 12nm FinFET process.

The node shrink will enable higher clock speeds and better power efficiency.
We are not sure how the appearance of new SKU will affect existing Polaris products, but judging from the codename, we are expecting a higher-end model to be offered alongside RX 580.

ASUS reveals ROG Strix XG49VQ Double-Wide 144Hz FreeSync 2 HDR monitor

ASUS has officially unveiled their latest ROG Strix series monitor, a FreeSync 2 Display that offers support for almost anything a user could want, from high-refresh rates to Adaptive-Sync and double-wide resolutions.
Meet the ASUS ROG Strix XG49VQ, a 49-inch 3840x1080 monitor which supports both FreeSYnc 2 and VESA DisplayHDR 400.

On the colour side of the spectrum, the Strix XG49VQ offers support for an extended colour gamut, one which is equivalent to 125% sRGB, while also providing high contrast levels and low latency display input, as is required by AMD's FreeSync 2 HDR specification.

The monitor will ship with support for VESA mounts, with the display's stock stand offering support for tilt, swivel and height adjustment.
On top of this ASUS has also integrated support for technologies such as ASUS Shadow Boost, GameVisual and App Sync, as well as a blue light filter option.

The resolution and aspect ratio of this display makes it equivalent to two 1080p monitors sitting side-by-side, allowing the ROG StrixXG49VQ to act as a single screen alternative to a dual-monitor setup, which is great news for ultra-wide gamers.
Such a setup with two displays would have a bezel sitting in-between a set to twinned monitors, making it unusable for most modern games, Ultra-wide monitors mitigate this issue entirely.

ASUS has not revealed the retail pricing or release date of their ROG Strix XG49VQ monitor.

AMD Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Coming to MacBook Pro Next Month

Today Apple has introduced its new iPad Pro and has resurrected both the MacBook Air, now with Retina display, and the Mac mini. In addition to all these new announcements,
there's another one the company didn't talk about at the event: an update for the MacBook Pro that will now feature AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics chips.
According to Apple, this will allow a 60% improvement in performance over the Radeon Pro 560X, the most powerful GPUs available to date for the MacBook Pro.

These professional-oriented chips are manufactured on a 14 nm process, this is not the 7 nanometer Vega 20 that's expected to be released later this year for the enterprise space.
The GPU is codenamed "Vega 12" and comes with HBM2 memory, which helps reduce space requirements in a notebook, compared to traditional GDDR5 memory.
Vega Pro 20 in the MacBook Pro has 20 CUs (1,280 shaders), Vega Pro 16 has 16 CUs (1,024 shaders).

Both MacBook Pro configurations will be available on November 14th at a price yet to be determined.

AMD's Zen 2 Could be Revealed on November 6th, "Next Horizon" Event Scheduled

AMD Investor Relations will host a "Next Horizon" event on November 6th, and although there is no confirmation on what products will be announced there, the title alone makes us think about AMD's Zen 2 architecture.
The company has just explained that on that day their executives will "discuss the innovation of AMD products and technology, specifically designed with the datacenter on industry-leading 7 nm process technology".
AMD announced Ryzen and quite a lot of details about the Zen's processors on their last "Horizon" event, so it seems plausible that the incoming event will be perfect to talk about its next-gen architecture.

That focus on the 7 nm process technology will probably make AMD talk about their new Vega graphics, but it seems end users will have to wait, as datacenters come first.
