1080 ti would be massive overkill for 1080p, but if you could get one cheap 2nd hand, then you'd be good to go for years

 

Get 2nd hand 1080Ti, the market is flooded since GPU mining is dead, so get a card that was used for few month and comes with warranty, even if the card wasn't used for mining, they cannot be sold at high price because of the mining cars that drop the price.

 

Great! Yeah, I'm even thinking about a 1070, hope it still be okay to handle future games.

 

A gtx1080 would be a good upgrade for you if its around the $450 mark. 1080ti's may hold in price ($650-700) and imo would be overkill for 1080p.

 

DLSS is very interesting, basically AA for free, with no performance impact.

The question is, the time developers will need to implement this, to become usefull in this 20 series!

 

It is an overkill for current games... But will it be an overkill 5 years from now?

 

I suggest you buy a new GPU when a new game comes out where you need the power and you invest a lot time into. That is mostly the best time if you want stretch your dollars.

You're not going to notice 50 FPs more from 120+ for old game as much as 30 to 60 FPS on a newer game.

 

And 2080 will ? It actually has less RAM than 1080 Ti, while having same performance and higher price.

I've noticed you ran the demo at 4K, but as it's using UE4 convolution bloom you might have run into a graphic issue unless Epic implemented a specific solution.

Long story short, the convolution bloom is using an extremely high quality texture ( named convolution Kernel) and applying it in hottest/brightest point of the pictures. It's really noticable by those star shape:



If you go 4K with a kernel of too low resolution (like the default kernel of the engine with the exact same shape as the one from this demo), your results end up corrupted. I went a bit deeper into the details in a post on unreal engine forum there:

Nope. I'm quite pleased with my 2080ti pre-order coming from a 980ti

 

I really dont understand, why these cards (and especially the RTX2080) get "Guru3d Recomended" badges. 2080TI FE is loud, and has the worse FPS/USD ratio EVER due to insane pricing = recomended? And 2080 is even worse IMO...

 

when you are done is it possible to get a userbench benchmark on these cards? thanks.

 

For me, I was kinda wondering how much performance is left on the table using a Intel Core i7-5960X at 4.2. I'd say 15-20%. Also Hilbert, I'm sure you checked this, but make sure your OC on your X99 wasn't killed by the MS microcode update.

 

The wait is over. 2 days late but gave Hilbert a chance to test the AIB stuff and make sure all ok.

@Hilbert Hagedoorn : There are some anomalies in FPS between 2080 and 1080Ti. In some cases 2080 shows quite large advantage over 1080Ti @1080p. But loses it completely at 1440p and4K.
In some cases it keeps same percentage advantage across all resolutions.
And in some cases performs exactly same.

That's quite unusual because 1st case would hint HW changes which allow it to get higher maximum fps in lighter workloads.
2nd case would hint that there is not that HW advantage and it is just bit stronger.
and 3rd case would hint other type of bottleneck than GPU, but that's not the case since fps goes down proportionally with resolution.

One of weirder anomalies is Battlefront II vs. Battlefield 1.
- That's almost same engine, but in Battlefront II 2080 has serious advantage at 1080p and completely loses it at 1440p/4K.
- in BF1 2080 keeps above 1080Ti by 20% @1080p; 16% @1440p; 12% @ 4K.

Something does not feel right there. Maybe bug in driver, maybe something else.
