Anyone still overclocking a 5+ year old CPU without issue?

I decided to OC my cards +100 core and +400 memory. This gave me a score of 7922 on Fire strike ultra. It appears that's a few hundred more than Hilberts 1070 sli score review. Not bad all things considered.

 

I have a Core2Duo E6850 running with a little overclock. It's not 24-7, but I got it in 2008 and over the next nine years, ran video games on it basically every day (last year it went on light duty as I started using my new rig). It's got more water cooling than it'll ever need, and the overclock is slight, so I wasn't really stressing it I don't think.

 

i5 2500 k @ 4.5Ghz running near enough 24/7 since early 2012. Temps sometime go up to 78-79 under load. Been fine the voltages are 1.5 for the ram and 1.33 v for CPU. So reluctant to upgrade right now.

 

Lets see it's no longer in my hands but my previous 2600K ran and still runs at 4.6 and the owner is running it on lower voltages than I did. That's probably 6 years without issue at 4.6

 

My i5-4670k was delid'ed about a week after I purchased it within the first month after the CPU was available and up until Sep 2016 it was running 24/7 @ 4.0ghz on air and this past year it's been running 24/7 @ 4.4ghz. The air cooler was a Thermalright Venomous X, and the more recent cooling is doing via custom loop. XSPC Raystorm v3 CPU block, Aquacomputer Kryographics gtx 780ti (@ 1.3ghz) block, DDC-1t pwm pump, XSPC ex360 and ex280 radiators. At 4.4ghz and 1.31v the CPU doesn't exceed 45'c while gaming. And since it shares a loop with the 1.3ghz 780ti, the coolant air/water delta idles at 2.5-3'c and gaming doesn't get any higher than about 7-8'c.

Tomorrow i'm installing a Watercool Heatkiller Dual DDC pump top and two DDC-1t pwm pumps for redundancy and perhaps some cooling improvements. But mostly to avoid the sticking impeller issue these pumps can have.

 

I've got a Q9650 that I've had since new in 2008. It's been running at 4GHz all that time with very little issue.

I have had to bump up the voltage a few times. It was originally stable at 1.34V, now it needs 1.39v.
Other than that it's been fine.
Considering it's coming up to 10 years old it's been an amazing CPU. I've never ran a CPU for so long and i don't think I ever will again.

My 4690k on the other hand lasted no way near as long. I had it at 4.5Ghz with 1.22v and after only about a year it became unstable and I had to back off to 4.3Ghz and 1.2v. I got fed up with it in the end and upgraded to a 4790k, which I run at stock.

I don't think the 22nm lithography is as resilient as the good old 45nm process was.

Today my i7-2600K died...Buyed in november 2017 used of course. 2 months stable @ 5Ghz/1.53V daily (idle 45 °C / Prime small fft 91 °C), after two months degraded and stayed @ 4.8/1.52V daily for about 3 months. Last 5 months run @ 4.7/1.50V (idle 43 °C / Prime small fft 89 °C) and then today died. Windows won't start up and almost 2 linux distro goes on kernel panic. RAM are a pair of Corsair Vengeance 16GB 1600Mhz buyed 8 months ago and never overclocked.
Buyed it €80 for a budget gaming PC and after became the CPU in my main rig.
Cooling by a Noctua NH-D15, motherboard Sabertooth P67

Now I've buyed a delidded i7-3770K and I think I must stay lower with the voltages ahah

 

Way too hot, too much voltage.

Especially when you saw it degrade, I’d say you killed it on purpose.

 

1.53v and you wonder why it died? :-/ Frankly I'm amazed it lasted two months.

 

I'm surprised yours hasn't died yet.

Mine won't even boot into Windows at 4.3 Running 4.2 at 1.2v (1.76v under load).

Could be the mainboard's fault though, I don't know.

I had a 1.5v 2600k that did 5.2ghz, granted my temps were 60c~ on H20.

Volts aren't the main issue, it's all that current and heat.
That's why water cooled chips last much longer on high OC

 

I'm pretty sure there's a typo there somewhere 1.76 would kill the thing pretty fast.

And for 4.3, you need more than 1.2 for sure for the majority of chips (AFAIK, an i7 in general requires slightly higher vcores compared to an i5, due to hyperthreading.)

I'm only running it at 4.2GHz with 1.2v, and it's not a 24/7 OC. I run stock clocks/voltages 90% of the time. When I want to play a game, I dual boot to Windows (my main OS is Linux), and enable the OC. And I'm even only doing that when the game I want to play has perf issues.

The CPU is gonna outlive me, most probably...

 

I'm still running my old 2600k at 4.0Ghz @ 1.2v on H20, it never goes over 50c.

Long may it continue as I see no need to change.

 

3930k @ 4.6Ghz - HT On - 1.42v - H100i V2 push/pull

 

Been tinkering with my i7 980X again recently, managed to hit 4.5Ghz with 1.4v, wouldn't boot any higher than that no matter what voltage I threw at it.

 

Q9550 @ 3.8 Ghz... still running without issues.
i was even able to lower the voltage a bit more since i read a bit into the GTL´s..

this CPU is from 2007? i think.. And i OCed it a month after i bought it back in 2007/8..
And its still happy with its OC of 1ghz...

make it short..i do not see or feel any degridation of teh CHip since i bought it 10 YEARS ago.. points in AIDA are the same, well better, since im allways changing stuff the more i learn about it..Takes years, haha

im under 1.35 volts on the vcore...1.33 maybe...

Been Running a e5450 on a used Abit ip35-e for a few years at 3.83 ghz [1.34v] with a 450Fsb, pretty solid, though very hungry, Still works ok, the board can run 475+ fsb with a quad, but this elphida memory i have is very terrible. Its about as fast as a core i3 7100 in non avx workloads.

hey you never know, A board I have lets you set the voltage all the way up to 1.8v without so much as a warning lmao

 

Got my 2nd hand i7 ivy bridge out of a server. I figure it was at least 3 years old when I got it. I've ben running it @ 4.2 ever since.
Strange> But I sold my i5 ivy bridge for more than I paid for the i7. Must be because it was out of a server.
Game on.

 

I am still using my 4770k overclocked to 4.4ghz at 1.25 volts, since day 1 when it first came out.

 

Big shout out to fellow Sandybridge runners! Running a 2600k @ 4.5ghz since 2011, 1.3V. Temp would spike a fair bit with increasing voltages and temp after this point. Had 4.6ghz for a little while but this was the much more comfortable overall. Spent 4 years air cooled with a hyper evo 212 then changed to a h110 about 4 years ago and still playing ball. Shame about the recent patches that have gimped the performance a fair bit though. I really love this machine.
