I think the price alone will be crippling enough. The 7890XE when it was released was a terrible value, and really only existed so Intel had evidence of a product that would one-up AMD, regardless of price. But their 28-core will not have such a performance advantage, and the price will be unobtainable. I think it's reasonable that the 2990WX could reach a 4.4GHz all-core overclock with liquid cooling. Any higher than that and I don't think most liquid cooling system could keep up. The 28 core i9 can reach 5GHz which could give it a performance lead, but that isn't realistic or sustainable.
So, I'm not sure what exactly Intel can do to compete without cannibalizing Xeon.
So I guess the next-gen 64c/128t Epycs will be this thing:

Simple comparison between i9-7980XE and 2990WX (multicore benchmark).
For me (gaming and stuff) the best desktop processor is i7 8700k. Next: i9 9900k.

I would be really surprised if the 28 core i9 can boost to 3.5 on air and 4 watter really but we will see i guess (all cores)

I would be surprised if it was released at all. Call me a skeptic, but I have doubts that this chip will ever see the light of day (I see it as just a PR stunt rather than an actual product). It's basically a rebranded Xeon and will require a Xeon server board, but I don't see anything like that coming to the consumer market anytime soon. If it is released, it will probably be vaporware, with only a few shops offering it (and of course no review samples). Until I see some leaks on a potential board, I'll continue to treat it as just a PR stunt.

@D3M1G0D maybe they can squeeze it on their x299 platform? If they do will either be very expensive or very limited pieces i can not imagine getting more than a handfull per waffer ...although i am certainly not an intel engineer.

    Give me Core'z ....I don't care how slow/ Just give me Core'z

F**k Battlefield, Tomb Raider and Call of Duty..... I play cinebench 24/7

Core'z ...remember 8 core bulldozer? .....I9-9900k gonna over take all ryzen processors.

just like sandy did bulldozer....AMD is slow....Core'z my Ass

Let's petition so they release a 128 core snapdragon!

    haha....give me core'z ......:p

I love cinebench ....Look at me!

I can't believe people are looking at core Count versus speed of output from command from a processor.

I very much doubt it. Intel's demo was done on a LGA 3647 board - if it could be done on LGA 2066 then I'm sure they would have used that instead. I've heard rumors of a possible 22-core CPU for X299 but that would be really stretching it. AMD's X399 platform is basically a variant of their server platform and designed with XCC (extreme core count) CPUs in mind while Intel's X299 isn't.

    You forgot 7980xe overclocked singlethread 220-225 :D

That is why so many bought it, because it is very fast in all scenarios :) There is no tradeoff in performance. Too bad it's pretty expensive (~90$) more than 2900wx 32 core and is pretty hot :p

Finally who gets what is important. Performance AND price.

Says the one who wrote "In Cinebench". Thank you!

I'm sorry that people care more about the overall performance of a processor rather then outdated simplistic programs?

Not sure what you're trying to get at. Individual core performance matters, ofcourse, but your statement makes zero logical sense since it implies you'd rather have some nonsensical slow 10GHz single core processor.

I would like to discuses about the fact that many professional users will not play with OCing on their workstation, for them Stability and Performance are the most important.
In this case the 2990wx is much better CPU then i9 7980xe, and cheaper, so only way Intel could compete is to release the 28C @ 3.8Ghz all core boost clock, and I don't see Intel releasing such CPU under $2000.

If Intel decides to play dirty they can Paper launch such CPU with rushed Server MB converted to Desktop but with very very small supply to not loose money so that they could have 2990WX equivalent only in their portfolio.

Then I must be the only "intel fanboy" being owner of 1800x and 1950x. Both Amd cpu's.

Mostly in dreams. Full loop of expensive water, remove TIM = void warranty on 2K$ CPU (feelsbadman), dangerous long-term use with a consumption of 500+ watts (Cinebench @4.5). But ... who cares about singlethread in HEDT so much? @4Ghz is fine, the main thing that is not like in servers with @2.5. "why so many bought it" - I think you're exaggerating count, mindfactory.de shop, 7980XE sold 70, 1950X sold 1150.
