Maybe I'm wrong but I though Extreme had a crazy high amount of Cache??? I remember being a young teen and reading MAXIMUM PC magazines and the moment Extreme was launched it put a few nails on AMD's coffin.

it's not a question of core... it's about the CPU in itself.
exemple: my Pentium D 955 XE start as a contest's loot, i start to play as normal CPU with it,
then start to OC it on Zalman cooler (really ages ago lol).
Then i started water cooling and get more OC with more voltage, it was awesome then the phase of the ABIT mobo burn (literaly lol)... the CPU were 100% unafected.
Then i switched to Opteron and started working... so with more money i get a nice Asus X48 to play more hardcore with this XE (phase changing, pelletier and at the end LN with a team of friends).
the result: at each time the mobo died (really a lot lol) but the CPU survived...
It is finishing it's day on an other X48 with light OC as the 1st computer for the child of a friend who buy it after all of this.
in 2018 it is still in use and work fine on Windows 10 with zero fail...

This was the difference with regular production.

On other hand who need this right now? :)

nope the huge cache is the same as high end CPU (like the Q9550 with 12Mb as an exemple) it just have no limit in OC when the K have light OC (wich is enough for regular use btw)

True, I also laugh at people who buy ram when you can just download it for free!

Joking aside, I think this statement could be proven both true and false. We are starting to see applications from all different types to scale across more than 4 threads now, but there are still applications that don't, or scaling on anything with more than 4 threads does not lead to that big of a difference in performance.

Maybe this means intel will have a consumer cpu without the useless igpu so we can overclock properly without spending a small fortune to go hedt, I miss the good old days of base clock OC.

They realized that 7980XE is just a midrange i5 compared to 2990X.

Is it really that true, if the "spokesperson" doesn't even have a name?!

Business wise, I don't think Intel can afford to get rid of their extreme line.

AMD is stepping up and they have unlocked chips.

I don't think Intel would make all chips unlocked and/or not to get extra money for the better binned chips.

Intel actually needs to wake up to the current market.

Their complacency has led to AMD sneaking up on them. Just check out what's happend with the market with Ryzen and Epyc.

They could use 'Irresponsible' before Nvidia trademarks it.

It's not just about software making use of the additional cores. More cores makes for a more responsive system.

I don't know why they just don't call it the Intel i9 left nut edition because that's how much it's worth

My CPU hits 100% on all 6 cores and 12 threads while playing BF1.

    We're getting there...

    Loading or actual gameplay?

I remember when q9450 did that by bf3, ok mostly 90-95%.. but that had only 4cores/threads.

Sounds like when dual-cores came out and people just like you were saying "What? That's not needed. There's no realistic reason a computer that's not a server will ever need more then 1 CPU"
