    I've get some info that Fiji and Vega had exactly same limitation GCN had from its incemption: 4096SP/256TMU/64ROPs. I can't remember where it came from, but I think it was one of AMD tech guys.

    First was VLIW and good 5xxx/6xxx line (but it was not advanced enough, PC and NextGen consoles in mind)
    Then was GCN with CU (GPU+Compute Units for more flexible & Power efficient Programing)
    Now we have VEGA with NCU (Next Gen Compute Units, and this one along with ZEN will be in PS5/XboX X2)
    Another Next-Gen should be NAVI (but we need for oficial statement what it will bring, AFIAK it will be Multi Stacked GPUs with HBM Tech)

    Yes, we need good developers, with Vision & Passion for Eye Candy/Tech (and not only $$$)
    Yes Game will sell even better.

    As for ATI/AMD Vision for PC Gaming, IMO they are the Real Leaders (Just Ask Console Developers, and PC DX12/VLK ones for e.g. Bethesda, Square EniX & EA)
    Their Close to the Metal Tech (DX12/VLK) is really something.

    What's the reason for the absence of new GPU drivers? Will the next driver be a big one with a lot of game updates and profiles or what's taking so long?

    Martin Ashton has joined AMD Radeon
    Back in January AMD started to reforge their Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) after the departure of Raja Koduri, placing the division under Mike Rayfield as a senior vice president of AMD and general manager of the RTG.
    During this time, the former ATI veteran David Wang was also hired as senior vice president of engineering.

    We have confirmed that Martin Ashton has joined AMD as Corporate Vice President, reportedly taking a role within Radeon. Martin Ashton was Imagination Technologies' Executive Vice President of Engineering for 26 years,
    leaving in late 2016 to work with Intel on their graphics technologies. With experience at both Intel and Imagination Technologies, Ashton is an ideal candidate for a position within Radeon, especially given his experience developing the PowerVR graphics architecture.

    At AMD, Ashton will work under David Wang to develop Radeon's graphics roadmap and to create a new range of competitive products. Chip development takes a lot of time, so don't expect Ashton's addition to AMD to have consequences for Radeon in the near future.

    Chinese Company Begins Making x86 Processors Based on AMD "Zen" Architecture

    Chinese chipmaker Hygon began mass-producing its first x86 processors codenamed "Dhyana" based on AMD's "Zen" micro-architecture. The processor is the fruition of a deal AMD entered with a Chinese state-owned company back in mid-2016.
    As part of this deal, a company called Haiguang Microelectronics Company (HMC), in which AMD has a 51 percent stake, would license the "Zen" architecture to another company called Hygon (Chengdu Haiguang Integrated Circuit Design Co.), in which AMD owns a 30 percent stake. Hygon would then design "Dhyana," and a third entity (likely TSMC or some other Chinese foundry), would contract-manufacture the chip.

    Such legal gymnastics is necessary to ensure AMD makes good on the $293 million it will take from the Chinese firms to license "Zen," while not breaching the x86 architecture cross-licensing agreement it signed with Intel, the core x86 IP owner.
    Chinese firms are going through all this trouble to build "Dhyana" instead of simply placing a large order of EPYC processors not just because they want more control over the supply and pricing of these chips.

    ASRock GPU Roadmap Reveals Radeon RX Vega and Radeon RX 500 Series Till Q1 2019
    Next-Gen Launch in Q2 Possible

    The latest ASRock GPU roadmap has just been displayed which showcases that the current Radeon RX series graphics cards won’t be replaced with next-gen parts till Q1 2019. According to the reveal (Videocardz via XFastest),

    it looks like Radeon RX 500 series and Radeon RX Vega series is here to stay for a while but let’s take a deeper look at what this and previous GPU roadmaps have meant.


    ASRock Reveals Radeon RX GPU Roadmap Up Till Q1 2019 – No New Next-Gen Parts But Is That Really The Case?

    ASRock’s GPU roadmap lists their entire product lineup which includes graphics cards from the AMD Radeon RX Vega and AMD Radeon RX 500 series families. ASRock,
    a recent entrant to the graphics market, has been manufacturing custom and reference designs based around AMD’s Polaris and Vega GPUs.
    Their first graphics cards, the Phantom Gaming RX 500 series started to enter retail market in April 2018 and was recently expanded to the Radeon RX Vega series too.


    The current ASRock Radeon RX 500 series comes in four gaming flavors and two mining flavors.
    The Radeon RX 500 series from ASRock is based around their Phantom Gaming designs which include “X” series for High-End, “D” series for Dual-Fan, “OC” for overclocking and “MK2” for the Mark 2 second generation cards.
    Their mining series include “M1” single-fan and “M2” dual-fan series.
    The ASRock Phantom Gaming X Radeon RX Vega cards are based on the reference design and not much to be seen there as demand is driving sales for these cards, custom models or not.



    The ASRock MK2 variants are expected to hit the market soon and will be a slightly more refined version of the current RX 500 series cards with better heatsinks and cooling solutions from what was seen at Computex.

    Now back to the roadmap, it lists these cards up till Q1 2019 which may hint that there are no new cards coming from AMD up till late Q1 2019 or even Q2 around the mid of 2019. But there’s a very different perspective on this roadmap.
    We have seen roadmaps that didn’t mention any new cards and only current cards up till a certain date but then, all of a sudden, there was a new launch that happened in between the time frame of that roadmap.

    Companies usually showcase roadmaps to the public which only show current products. They also keep internal roadmaps which show an expected timeframe of when the next-gen or updates to the product line would launch.
    If ASRock was to show a next-gen product in their roadmap which may launch before Q1 2019, they would get in trouble with AMD as it would be a breach in NDA with AMD as the parent company hasn’t yet revealed a next-gen part, nor mentioned an exact launch date.

    AMD has only mentioned that they are bringing 7nm Radeon RX to gamers at their Computex 2018 press conference, aside from that, there’s nothing officially told.
    As for the Radeon GPU side, there have been rumors about a Polaris 30 update in fall of 2018 followed by mid-range Navi 7nm cards sometime in 2019.

    Also today i was checking some major e-tailer/retailer in EU about % of sold Free-Sync vs G-sync monitors:
    >2200 FreeSync sold Vs ~205 G-Sync ones ;)

    Then we have AMD/ATI states that more than 400mln users have Radeon Gaming in House :D
    Hmm, all this is so strange IMO

    But back to the topic, it's good that we have Intel with Us finally.
    Openness is #Better
    Also Beteshda shows us that VLK Game can Look & Run extremely GooD.

    AMD 7nm Vega 20 GPUs May Break The 20 TFLOPs Barrier, Estimations Reveal – Require Lots of Power, Really Expensive To Make

    AMD is preparing their brand new 7nm based Vega 20 GPUs which will be featured inside the next-gen Radeon Instinct products. AMD talked about the new GPU at Computex 2018, giving us a sneak peek at the upcoming server parts but a detailed analysis has been done by Ascii.jp which reveals it to be an HPC powerhouse in the making.


    AMD is the first and only GPU maker to announce a 7nm product which will be launching in the 2nd half of 2018, as confirmed by AMD themselves.
    The new 7nm process based Vega 20 GPU will come with a range of new features while offering twice the density compared to 14nm Vega 10 GPU since AMD is packing more stuff in a smaller die and will also be twice as much efficient due to enhanced architecture design and process maturation.

    The Vega 20 GPUs are tailor-made and optimized for HPC, Automotive and AI markets. As such, they have been equipped with new Deep Learning OPs, HPC algorithms and outfitted with the latest I/O interface (PCIe 4.0).
    With all the new tech and process enhancements involved, Vega 20 can turn out to be a compute powerhouse, allowing RTG to tackle their competitor’s HPC solution, the Tesla V100,
    which has been in the market for over a year nowBased on the estimation done by Ascii.jp, they are rounding the die size of the Vega 20 chip around 360mm2 while the Vega 10 chip measured at 484mm2. So that’s about a 70% reduction in the total die size.

    But here’s the thing, according to GloFo, 7nm LPP offers a 2.8 times increase in logic density which means AMD is using their own cell library rather than Global Foundries which comes with a 2x increase over the 2.8x increase as GloFo states.If the Vega 20 GPU was to be made on a 14nm LPP process, it would have measured at 720mm2. If the same calculation is driven to form a relation between the GPU die and Compute units, we would get up to 88 CUs (up to 96 CUs) on such a chip.

    That’s a 37.5% jump from the current 64 CU design on the Vega 10.It is being concluded that the extra space could mean a grouping of extra CUs on the chip. If that is the case, which seems unlikely since we have seen previous information and slides mentioning 64 CUs on the Vega 20 GPU, the other factor that would be considered is the frequency. Now the clock rate on 7nm LPP is a big trick, you either get 55% power savings from the same frequency as 14nm or you can get 40% faster clock rates from the same power as 14nm.
    Here’s the thing though, if you were to aim for 40% faster clocks at the same power package, you’d also have to feed power to the extra HBM2 VRAM (4 Stacks vs 2 Stacks), the new DNN instruction sets.

    The power package under such a scenario would easily exceed 400W.

    So taking a more conservative approach, the site estimates a 20% jump in clocks, saving around 30-40% power (300-350W), and a performance jump of 65%.
    This would lead to a jump from 12.66 TF to 20.9 TF.
    A remarkable jump indeed which would blow past the Tesla V100 (15.7 TFLOPs at max) in a 300W package.
    This is all theory at the moment but even without a core bump, the clock speed estimates are very likely to happen so it would be a jump in performance for HPC regardless.

    Also Vega 64 XTX has ~14.5 TF 1750/950
    OC to 1770/1200 and you have >16TF (So Raw PowaH is 2x of Fiji uArch)
    Somewhat correct when you look at Games Benchies & 3Dmark ;)

    A bit disappointing that it's only 75hz freesync range. Vega would be able to do around 100fps in some games with adjusted settings. Freesync monitors should have a minimum of 100hz nowadays.

    My Next OLED will have it all: HDR/FS2/144 etc.
