New PC Build Freezes During Intensive Gaming.

So, here are my setup details. I bought everything new, except my graphic card and sound card, which were pulled from my old system.

So, first, a little bit about how the system is setup.

I was not able to fit both CPU cooler fans into my rig, due to memory module size; the heatsinks on them are too big, so I have 1 fan placed between the two cooler blocks.
The fan that is being used is not PWM, as it only uses 3 pins. Due to this, I had to set BIOS to ignore the fan and set the minimum RPM to 600 (the highest number available). I then set the profile to Turbo.

I have my memory modules set to the XMP profile for 2400Mhz, by allowing DOCP. They are in the 2nd and 4th slot.

I have updated to the latest BIOS available and installed all the drivers from the manufacturer's motherboard website.

I have the latest Crimson drivers available installed for my GPU.

The PCI Wifi card is installed, with latest drivers.

My sound card is fully installed, with the latest drivers.

I have Windows 10 installed on one of the SSDs, and use the other SSD to install games.

So, when I use my PC, everything works fine, until I try to run a graphically demanding game (Rise Of The Tomb Raider, for instance). The games I play all seem to run on ultra settings quite happily, until about a quarter of an hour later, when my PC freezes. It doesn't reboot, and there is no response from any input. The only option is to hold the power button on my PC, until it turns off.

I've tried various configures for the BIOS and GPU, but to no avail.

If anybody on here has any suggestions for a fix, I would be greatly appreciative.

Download hwinfo32, play a game for about 45mins or so and post screenshots of the various temperatures.

If all looks ok, you'll want to make sure that RAM is stable.
Download HCI memtest and test all your memory for errors until it hits 300%.

If all that checks out, you may just try defaults for bios.
We'll go from there after the above if nothing seems to work.

I downloaded the HCI Memtest application, but it wouldn't test all of my RAM, so I then bought the pro version.

My virus suite quarantined the .exe file.

Mcafee is not a good AV to be honest.

That's a false alarm.

 

He didn't mention if hes OCing or not. Screen freezing is usually a OC issue with the video card or the CPU. Like Agent said at wits end try setting BIOS to defaults and see what happens. Possibly the driver your using is bunked out and you need a clean install of drivers. Let us know.

 

Yes, I agree, but my ISP provides the MCAfee suite, at no extra cost, so it saves paying for more software.

I did manage to exclude the MemTest exe file from the scan process, so was able to use it. From this picture, you can see that it passed, with no errors, at over 300 percent.

I guess that means the RAM modules are working okay.

You need to verify temperatures after 30+mins of gaming.

 

I tried underclocking my GPU by 5 percent, but I'm not really savvy on overclocking or using the Radeon Wattman suite, so I may have done it wrong.

With my BIOS, I did set it back to default settings yesterday, then adjusted the CPU fan profile, so that I could get past the post screen; due to PWM conflicts.

I then set the memory to the DOCP XML which was 2400 Mhz.

everything else is set to AUTO or default.

 

Thanks. I have the HWInfo program. Will test shortly. Will it matter if I run a game windowed? I usually try for exclusive fullscreen, if available.

As a side note, I'll display the GPU information as well, for when I get screenshots.

 

You can still run it in the background under fullscreen..

You just need the sensors running in the background.

 

I ran some temp tests.

Nice cool temps.

I then ran Rise Of The Tomb Raider, windowed.
For some reason, Radeon Wattman will only show details on a fullscreen display.

After 5 mins.

CPU temps still under 46 celsius.

I came back to take another screenshot and the timer was at 12 mins, with the PC frozen and unresponsive. The temps were still only at 47 celsius.

From this, I would assume that the problem is not from the CPU getting too hot.

Would you suggest doing the test again, but with GPU information on screen, to see if it's getting too hot?

Hwinfo would have GPU temps as well as other devices; you just have to scroll down.

Maybe try prime95 stress test and see if it freezes fast.

 

Ok I will see if I can run Prime 95.

As a side note, I did run again, checking the GPU temps, and they never went above 76 Celsius. Not sure if that is too high.

One thing I did notice was the GPU Utilisation was fluctuating wildly, while everything else seemed fairly stable.

From what I can tell, searching other forums, it is probably driver related.

 

A free AV (or just defender) would be way better than McAfee suite, tbh it wouldn't surprise me if that was causing problems too

Nothing in Event Logs giving you a clue of the problem?

 

I'll take a look, but I don't really know what to look for there.

I did notice that my GPU settings were reset to default, due to a system crash.

Am now going to run Prime95 for an hour, if my system stays running that long.

To be fair, I might just re install windows from scratch again, with default BIOS settings (RAM at default speeds) and just install all the drivers. Try testing from there, perhaps.

Just out of interest, without going off topic, which AV would you recommend?

 

Yes, I would recommend a fresh install with latest drivers and only the game you have that freezes installed and test from there.

 

If nothing helps, start questioning your PSU. New PSUs do fail and they do freeze system.

Also, wouldn't hurt to check your memory with memtest.

 

We covered that part, ram looks good.

 

Windows Logs > System

Would be a good place to start looking for ! or warnings around the time of the freezing

Tbh I would just enable Defender, use common sense not to run random exes from random sites, I haven't even got an AV installed on this machine atm
