Wouldn't it be rather up to OS to emulate Vista/XP/MS-DOS running solutions for older software?

I don't see a problem with ditching XP / Vista.

I play games design for 95/98/xp perfectly fine running 7x64, not sure why that is a problem for others.
As i dont use steam, dont really have a problem if they pull support, but for everyone whining: did you read the news completely??
...It is noted that you'll still be able to launch games from your library in the meanwhile....

Electron uses node.js for the backend and chromium as a frontend so not a lot changes over the current implementation.

Also "The latest Steam hardware survey indicates that 0.22 percent of Steam users are running Windows XP 32-bit and Windows Vista isn't even on the list."
Dropping support for legacy OS's doesn't imply the games will magically stop working, just some features unavailable (like the new chat client)

Please list me games which SPECIFICALLY need XP/Vista.

I have yet to face a game that won't boot on Windows 10, and I have plenty of very old games in my collection.

If you have a "retro" system then don't install newer versions of steam. Bonus, in a few years you will have retro steam too.

Which is just fine. Practically any older game needs some form of tinkering with it, in order to achieve the desired result. Specifically, if we speak about adoption them to 21:9.
However simply refusing to work, have yet to see that.

Why are people actually playing games via Steam, steam was made to play game, it's was made as a digital storage library for software that you would continue to buy yet never play any, well my 765 are. lol

Steam always checks for an updated version on startup and downloads the latest when available.

I guess a work around for this would be

Download game on a current version of Windows
Zip the folder up and transfer it to your XP machine or VM
Use a Nocd patch to get around Steam DRM

Or just download the game from a torrent site, if you already own it.

99% chance you can work around that with a bit of regedit wizardry.

As long as they don't drop support for Windows ME as that was a superior OS in every shape and form.

Steam becoming unusable on XP and Vista is just bad.
The way Ubisoft did it with Uplay is they're still able to use the last version that supported those OSes. Valve could easily do the same.
