I know Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake are coming with a x399 chipset. My question is whats better this new gen of intel cpu's or the x299 chipset with a 7980XE .

Do I wait for 9th gen or will 9th gen not have 18 core and just 6 or 8 cores. Thank you a bunch

Did you not get your other system going from RMA?

X399 is going to stay at 18c.

Upcoming Coffee lake or the revised ones will only be 8 core max.

I sent back everything. When we powered it up and CPU was dead 2k CPU at that I lost it,, and sent everything back.

What CPU will the 18c use, a 7980XE or a successor. Thanks again.

Thanks much for responding. Let me rephrase the question. Will the 7980XE CPU fit into the X399 OR are they going to make 8980XE to fit that chipset. Thanks

Judging by past history, x399 will only work for coffee lake and the next revision of coffee lake.

Thank you for your response Agent-A01 ... Heres the thing that gets me. Its a i7 porocessor but its ninth gen and 8 cores only. While the i9 which is a higher name is 8th generation. So whats faster core for core, the 7980XE 8th gen, or the i7 Coffee 9th gen. Weird, you would think i9 would mean intels latest and greatest,, but apparently its the i7 that gets next gen and not the i9 ,,, wtf ...

That's how it will always be.

Consumer variant (LGA 115x) always gets the latest gen of CPUs.

Workstation versions are always one step behind because it takes a lot of R&D making an 18core version of a 6 core(etc).

Small chips are always first for many reasons including above.

X299 is based on kabylake, aka 7700k gen, while latest is coffee lake.
This time, they are pretty much the same IPC.

Coffee lakes main benefit is ability to clock higher with less voltage.

Thanks again for your educated scholarly response. So heres my next question after reading the info you gave, When will 9th generation 18 core CPU's coming out. I find it funny how i9 has a higher number but is 8th gen while the new Coffee Lake is 8 core i7 and 9th gen. I dislike how Intel names their models... sighs

    Probably Q3 or Q4.

    I don't know for sure.

I'm betting the X299 will get coffee lake revision(better clock speeds) somewhat soon.

Oh so the X299 lives and will accept coffee lake 18 core in Q4 ?
