Shame it doesn't look very good.

 

I ve always loved political submarine movies, and i happen to like tony scott may he rest inpeace, i ve always liked his direction to action movies, one personal favorite is the last boy scout from 1990 with bruce willis, coming into 1995 we find this thriller, with denzel washignton and gene hackman, two personal favorites actors, and here there is no shortage of decent actinf and enough thrills.
There's an early scene in "Crimson Tide" when the characters are playing a trivia game, remembering the stars of early submarine movies like "Run Silent, Run Deep." It's clever,*and really engaging early on.
The tradition includes a strong commander, and the Alabama possesses a legend: Capt. Ramsey (Gene Hackman), who trained under the legendary Adm. Hyman Rickover, father of the nuclear submarine, and is now nearing the end of his active duty. Ramsey, known for chewing up subordinates, is also famous for his little dog, a*Jack Russell*terrier that is allowed to lift its little leg wherever it pleases.
Director Tony Scott ("Top Gun") handles scenes with skill, especially the manouvering of the submarines, Instead, the movie develops along ideological lines, as Ramsey and Hunter - both absolutely convinced they're right - attempt to gain control of the submarine.*
All in all i really like this film and a great addition to the best submarine movies of all times, this one belongs to the top tier indeed.

 

Loved it when Hans Zimmer played the dive scene music when I went to see him live, and yes it's a great movie with the process and procedure at con and with regards to weapons deployment being very close to how it was / is done in real life. The only place it starts to fall apart is in the combat stuff, The Ohio Class are SSBN, their sole purpose is to stay quiet, very quiet. The fact that the enemy managed to not only get the drop on them once but twice in boats that were seriously outdated in terms of their sonar detection capabilities as well as the fact that the Akulas were loud as f*ck was quite surprising which leads to the other issue, if an SSN has surprised an SSBN then it's good bye SSBN, somehow they managed to escape being destroyed twice. Then again it's cinematic and exciting so who cares

Not a movie, but I think you would enjoy the Last Ship TV series. Plenty of ship vs sub duels with a lot of attention to technical details. Complex evasion strategies and tactics used, so quite sure some serious navel experts were consulted for the show.

 

Agreed it's a fun enough show to watch

Apart from having an Astute class in the show that doesn't exist HMS Achillies, the ops room / con is totally wrong and they off set the capabilities of the Astute by having it crewed by a bunch of muppets and giving it a sonar system that would have been an embarrassment during the early years of the cold war, having to go active sonar to find the Nathan James, they should have picked her up half way across the Atlantic with Passive, also 4 Spearfish and all the James has to do is turn round in a great big circle to avoid being hit. It's top quality nonsense just like Hunt For Red October and Crimson Tide it's exciting to watch but that's because reality is really boring... well from a certain point of view.

 

I wish they had written another solution for her actions after discovering her skate partners part in ending her skating career. To me, her actions did not fit the character.

 

Solo... it was just meh. Most Star Wars movies have that one scene or fight or encounter that makes you go ooo that was good, even the bad ones have at least one decent scene in it. This movie isn't bad it just doesn't have anything in it that makes you go wow, even this legendary 12parsec Kesel run turns out to be just alright and that sums the entire movie up, not bad, just alright. Apart from the last cameo which kinda left me scratching my head over weather it was who I thought it was and if it was how on Earth this movie manages fit in to the rest of the SW timeline.

 

this film, for me is the ultimate buddy cop film, a time where buddy cop was the norm, with lethal weapon 2 years before it, this is just another classic, add to that, retro stylish sunglasses, 80s soundtrack from the great harold faltemeyer, and action sequences that belong to the classic action film shelf.
sly stallone here looks more of a classy stylish woredrobe cop, a insistent and no nonsense approach however brutal and crazy, as we see in the opening scene, such a great opening anyway, not sly s best performance but this guy has action movie star in his blood, his charisma on screen is what makes up for his lesser acting skills on some occasions.
Kurt russel is the buddy cop, a man totally different to his partner, tight jeans and tight basic t shirts, he s just a cop from the streets, working with the filth of Los angeles.
i like this movie a lot, and jack palance is one hell of a screen presence as a villain, it s just brilliantly cast.
the direction is spot on with this one, but the ending felt a bit too rushed, although entertaining, but this was the 80s, the beauty of it.

This is something i always talk about, at a time when i enjoyed movies like fatal attraction, body double, body heat and basic instinct which is a personal favorite not just for the beauty of sharon stone but for paul verhoeven s effort in this to create the perfect romance thriller film, those voyeuristic erotic movies we used to have back in the day.

I saw lately "to catch a thief" and i felt how many scenes between the two leads showed that sexual tension which is demonstrated later on in the film with a rather funny and opportunistic way.

Do you guys think that alfred hitchcock created the romance thriller genre and eroticism was added to it during the 70s and 80s which made the softcore thriller movies?

Does the internet and access to porn movies etc has made this genre s demise afterall?
Or could we have a rise of hitchcock type of thrillers back, or is it a lack of ideas to create new movies something which havent been previously explored before.

I would like to add that these kinds of movies are the ones being put on tv during my teenage days i grew up watching these on the moviechannel back then, i liked the femme fatale premise and what could bring to the screen of mystery and suspense.

Is the erotic thriller still on a demise and what do u think could make it rise again?

 

if ur a fan of james woods, as much as i do, with his over the top acting that i fail to forget in The specialist, anyway back on topic, the movie here is a 80s hard boiled cop film noir type of cop thriller, the movies that i absolutely love and are my favorite genre just behind james bond 007.
i always like to get back to rewatching this film is because of the oozing atmosphere since fhe first scene , u feel that noir cop thriller coming along to keep u on ur toes, and the who dunit feeling gets to u, james woods is amazing here as the cop investigating a murder , a weird one to say the least.
as a noir enthusiast i highly recommend this film, a movie made in an era where a male cop is the main man, add to that the seemingly bleak score it has, this one kept me asking who did it until the last scene, a great addition to the neo noir movies of the 80s.

 

Yesterday I watched Nightcrawler, and then it got to me I need to re-watch the original can-we-get-away-with-it move about TV:

Ready Player One:

Annoying, the movie is annoying on so many levels, the plot is paper thin with a stupid overarcing message. Good guys want to solve dead guys puzzle because he offers control of The Oasis (the VR world they play in) and half a trillion dollars in shares. Yup loads of shares in a company that from what I see from the movie has no way of making any cash. The movie never explains how the guys behind this place made any cash from it, they did somehow, but it did spend a lot of time explaining how everything you own in game is earned in game and that when your guy in the game dies you lose everything you have earned in game and I am guessing because the world is a poor and desolate place and so many people have invested so much time in the game it is the equivalant of losing everything in the real world, theirs some stupid exposition dump about his Uncle In Law betting some house deposit money on an in game fight. Which is another issue with the movie, exposition dumps on how and why stuff works the way it does in The Oasis.

Anyway we then get on to the bad guys who want to win the competition so that they can fill the players of The Oasis viewable area with ads... yes they want control so that they can sell banner ad space... serious. Not for half a trillion dollars in shares but so they can sell ad space... this is the same company that has the facility to run what appears to be hundreds of VR interface pods, literally has a side line in slave labour to pay off credit debts, yeah if you have credit debts they basically enslave you to act as what I would basically call a human bot farmer within The Oasis, and they have the ability to track down exactly who you are and where you live based solely on your first name and an item you bought in game, yup their is a scene in which they pin point exactly who the main protagonist is based on him telling the women he has fallen in love with (which happens in the space of around 30 minutes of interaction) his real world first name and the fact that he bought some fancy upgraded VR suit... in game that is meant to have billions of people playing it... did I say the plot was stupid and paper thin? Oh yeah, plot armour here the bad guy writes his access password on a piece which he sticks to the side of his VR access pod.... geesh the plot mechanics for this movie are so stupid and like I said annoying.

Then we get to the worse part, the pop culture references. So many references lets look at it this way what Marvel does with it's own in world references is doing it well what this did was cram every single scene with as many references as possible and they were all over the place. Their was an entire scene based around The Shining which started well and very quickly went down hill and then ended up making you wonder why would a guy take a women on a date to see a 20 year old movie... were the hell is showing a 20 year old movie? If you went to the movies today would you be going to see a 20 year old movie... the second you start thinking about it you see how stupid some of the references turn out to be.

 

I genuinely like only one battleship movie and that's: Space Battleship Yamato (2010)

 

WTF when did Powers Boothe die....

such talent, whatta voice... brought snarkiness to another level in Deadwood.
imho squandered by Hollywood
