Must be a fun time to buy such an Apple system just to figure out that all your software designed for Intel CPUs won't run anymore (or run significantly slower at best). Way to screw over users and developers alike in one go. Thats the Apple we all know and hate. :)

I'd laugh if they started using AMD ones instead :p

How would that help them to gain complete independence? It would be hardly different, aside from possibly being able to negotiate better deals since AMD is much weaker than Intel.

This means they'll abandon x86-x64. But it's not like they would have been aboard that boat in the beginning anyway. First they used Motorola's CPUs, then PowerPC RISC, only then Intel. Now they are going for something else. It would be funny if it was ARM since it would mean super weak computers, even if the battery lasted forever. But maybe they will put their billions to actual use and design a totally new, modern architecture not burdened by a truckload of old legacies. It wouldn't be compatible with the old stuff since that would mean getting in legal trouble.

Interesting, would love to know if, or how much the discovery of Spectre and Meltdown affected this.

Apple can buy AMD and call it a day....

With all the cash Apple has it will be easier to simply buy the whole AMD and solves all his future desktop/laptop GPU and CPU needs.

Apple already use AMD GPUs in their imac pro, using AMD CPUs and APU can make sense if Apple buy AMD.

Samsung (not US company...) can't buy AMD because of US gov block, Intel can't do it due to monopoly and the same for Nvidia (foreign and monopoly) but Apple is an US company and can buy it without US gov blocking the deal.

I was thinking about getting into Apple through the Hackintosh route so I could avoid the proprietary stuff.

I wonder if Apple OS builds that come after this change will be able to run on Intel hardware at all?

I ll definitely try to get the last intel macbook that they will do ( from work), and start searching an alternative.

Ever since the iPad Pro came out, people have speculated about the possibility of using Apple's ARM chips in desktops. This was fueled by Geekbench results which showed the A9X being faster than a Core i5 (one of the reasons why I do not trust Geekbench - comprehensive testing showed it being slower than a last-gen Core m3 on average). Microsoft is also experimenting with putting Windows on ARM, with the ability to run x86 apps, so Apple may be thinking along the same lines.

Nope. Apple is for sheeple :p

I think Apple makes up only about 5% of their revenue. Not a major loss financially, although they do suffer a bit in terms of image and reputation (Apple is basically saying Intel is not good enough for them).

I'm just gonna copy and paste my reddit post on this matter.

They have been saying this for years since Apple bought Passif Semiconductors. I honestly doubt it will happen anytime soon, seeing the workloads for media creation benefits highly from Intel cpu cores, and AMD/Nvidia gpu cores. A lot of power, which ARM cannot match.

I could see Apple using their own design SOC's in budget laptops, iMac's, or Mac Mini's, but then again they just released the 2018 iPad 9.7" to compete against Chromebooks. Basically, they are competing with Chromebooks with a tablet. This alone should tell you this is bogus news.

Big name blogs, news names, and companies have said this in the past before, and it hasn't happened.
