    1. There really wasn't an 880...sure, there was an 880m, but, no one really cares.

    2. Nvidia has changed their naming before. Examples:

x80 and x080 have been the current high-end pieces, right?

but what about the 9800 GTX? 8800 GTX? 7900 GTX?

And if we're going off of naming, then the one below the x080 or x80 has always been the x070 or x70 right?

But then what about the 8800 GTS? 8800 GT? 7950 GT? 9800 GT?

Oh lets just throw some other outliers out there:

    6800 Ultra, 6800 GT, 6800 GS, 6800 GTO, 6800, 6800 XT, 6800 LE, PCX 5950, GeForce FX 5900 ZT, GeForce4 Ti4600, GeForce3 Ti500, GeForce2 Ultra, GeForce2 Ti, GeForce2 MX400, GTX 285, etc etc etc etc.

The list can go on and on.

So don't pretend to say that nvidia has a specific naming, they can, and will change it whenever they so please. Technically, the 1080 was part of a new naming scheme potentially, just like when they went from 9800 GTX, to 280.

because there are games that are so badly "written", they eat gpu power like the desert soaks up water.
with max quality (read NOT maxed out) i still dont get constant 60fps in siege @1440p, and i wont waste money
to replace my 1080 with a ti or titan.

Well, no amount of GPU power will help with those. I remember trying to replay Crysis 1 on my 1080 and immediately gave up (maybe there are patches for it, but decided not to bother). I also tried replaying old 2D strategy games but they ran no better than before. For certain games, there's no helping it.

The thing is, plenty of people were convinced that Nvidia would release the next-gen at GDC/GTC. People here and elsewhere were regularly recommending that people hold off on purchases because of Nvidia's impending next-gen product, and I also remember talking to people on Reddit about it (I expressed my doubts but they seemed hopeful, pointing to tech sites that reported on it). When it didn't happen the disappoint was palpable (very salty comments on Reddit), and I think those rumors got people's hopes up unnecessarily.

I don't think Nvidia is in any rush to release their next-gen product. The 1080 Ti is still doing fine and AMD is in no position to challenge them anytime soon. This is not to say that they aren't working on it, just that they won't be in any rush to release it.

    "
Where did the Ampere name originate from?
This info and name is derived and traced back towards a German website called 3dcenter"

Perhaps it's misuse of the word "originate" - seems you're probably right though. You can see why a quick skim over this resulted in me reading it that way though.

Unless you have AA on the highest, you should be getting consistently 80fps or higher with a 1080 @ 1440p. Not quite sure what you're doing wrong.

Could be his CPU as he is using a Threadripper. I wonder if he is using all 16 cores or doing the gaming mode thing and cutting the system in half to improve latency?

    I guess. I mean, i have a 1700x and a 1080 ti and am getting consistantly 125fps+ at 1440P T-AA-2x

Constant 144fps with vsync on, not gsync, and no fps drops below 144?
Not that i dont believe you, but i have yet to see a machine that can do it with vsync on.

I'm not sure where you got 144, as i said 125+.

I won't say it never, ever goes below 125, because i'm sure it possibly does, but i do have an FPS counter and i do not see that.

I do have gsync on, though i don't think that'd affect the FPS unless it went over 144 since i have 144hz...?

I do not however have vsync on, so it is able to go above 144fps

    Funny note: I could swear that I too thought I saw/read "144+ at 1440P T-AA-2x"! Mind's been playing again! :p

Maybe its because of the 1440p portion

Once I got a G-sync monitor I set the frame limiter to 142FPS and disabled my OSD. Gaming is much more enjoyable.

    @Aura89
    it was late..
but yeah, doesnt happen with vsync, at least not below 100fps.
i do see a bit higher min and better avg frames, after i switched to fast sync, run moni at 75hz and cap at 73fps.

next screen will be a tv, so no gsync for the time being, but at least its 120hz, and i could use fast sync..
