Well, to be fair, he was 76 after all, not that young. And he was said to be dead way before his 30th birthday, so I'm glad he was able to live so long and hopefully, he enjoyed his life for that time.

[IMG] So sad, Mr. Hawking's ultimate ambition was to travel into space and sadly this is not to be. When he was 9 years old he had the worst grades in the class. Not from being stupid, but from being bored at the easy work. The strange thing is Mr. Hawking never received the Noble Prize. He has received many prestigious awards but this "grand" award eluded him. I hope you are floating in space, free from the pain and prison of that wheelchair now Stephen. Say hello to old Al and Mr. Fig. Now you can race them to the best spot under the apple tree. One of Stephens best quotes is " If time travel is possible, where are the tourists from the future?" Thanks for the memories Mr. Hawking, GOD BLESS.[IMG]

My first response as I just saw it here first... was AWWW and my eyes started tearing up. One of the brightest candles was extinguished. He will be missed.

Yeah it's true, but I could imagine them giving him that award posthumously, kind of like the oscar for life time achievement, and I would totally agree. He was an icon of 20th century science.

Unfortunately, they (Nobel's) cannot be awarded posthumously....

This man is an inspiration to us all. Faced with terminal disease he lived a long life and contributed to mankind in many ways. A very strong individual that will forever be remember by this and all generations to come.

    Yes, that is what matters.

His life expectancy was to die a very long time ago.
People with his condition rarely live past 5 years old.

    RIP.

At least he's immortalized in physics, with Hawking Radiation named after him. I'm sure at some point, Nvidia will name a GPU architecture after him, too (assuming Intel doesn't prevent that somehow).
It's a shame he never got all the answers to his questions, but at least we're a lot further than we'd have been without him.

He was one of those few brilliant minds that knew how to "lower themselves" down to the more mainstream ear of the masses and that's what made him so popular and likable.

RIP, to live so long with his condition was quite a feat in itself.

The guy lived 53 years longer than doctors gave him. He's a credit to all people living with disabilities and still making a successful life out of it. Forget his amazing brain for 1 sec and take ya hat off to him surviving so long with motor neurone disease.

ALS has a life expectancy of about three to 10 years, but Stephen Hawking lived with the disease for more than five decades. R.I.P great man and thanks for the many wonderful books and videos.

Also RIP Jim Bowen whom used to get 12 million viewers for his Bullseye show.

His contributions to fundamental science are staggering. He will go down in history with such legends as Einstein, Newton and Galileo.
His body may be dead but it's fundamental particles exist forever.
