Should I wait until Volta - 2080 or wait until Volta 2080Ti

SLI the future? You really think games companies will target the IQ scaling on the masses forking out for two cards when a single mid range card is already more expensive than a console.

Sadly, this. SLI always was for enthusiasts only, and that only shows in reduced SLI support for more than 2 cards. Even 2 won't allways work well...
The only problem people have is that they can't wait for GPUs to follow available display technology... buying 2 4K screens and later complaining they can't run at 100Hz+ on their screens with a single GPU...

Agreed, i waited to see how my 1080Ti performed on my 1440p monitor before i moved up to 4k, Even Res Evil is smooth at 4k and max IQ (60fps) so im happy.

It's a shame SLI is so badly supported. Especially since it's currently impossible to max out all games at 4k without SLI. I also would love to throw in another 1080ti when they inevitably get cheaper after next gen is released. If you ask me, every game should be required to support SLI on release.

I'm fairly fine here with my 1440p 144Hz screen, I'll postpone any 4K upgrades until later down the road.

You can't blame the graphics card for poor game optimisations. Also market forces drive development so they spend time and money developing for common platforms.

    Yup, that is the dilemma.

I've wanted to ditch SLI for a while now but every time I come close I remember that when it works, it is the difference between smooth gameplay and a stuttering mess in many newer or more demanding titles.

Nvidia's disappointing lack of support (to the point where they seem to remove more profiles than they add, the latest being Escape from Tarkov) combined with several of the newer engines being SLI unfriendly does not bode well for the future.

I'd really like to see a resurgence of SLI as I have no problem paying the premium if the support is there.

Actually no, when it works it demolishes single GPU and it is necessary for smooth 4K gaming in many games.

Of course, you are entitled to your opinion.

It is true to some degree.

Even a 1080Ti is not enough for quite a bit of titles at 4K unless you like running at medium settings.

Wait, you have 2x1080Tis for... 1080p 144Hz?

That's like, over-over-overkill. But hey, good for you. I too was an SLI user for 3 generations but sadly it's quite the opposite of future right now. Witcher 3 was one of the last truly good scaling games (with 2 GPUs that is)... but since then, newer games came with less and worse scaling every time.

OP - If I were you I'd sell a 1080 since you won't get a better price for it than now with all the extreme mining caused shortages. It might be painful to do it until 2080 comes out, but worth it money wise. If you wish to keep the SLI rig (even though the support will be even worse than it already is) you'd have to hold on for like at least another year before a 2080Ti release.

Support for SLi is ebbing away for a reason, the cost to implement it in games isnt worth it, its the same reason why 3D for TVs has also died a death. Businesses do their market research, for 3D capable TVs it was when they stopped supplying free glasses they looked at how many buyers then requested them, too small a number to pursue the expense of using 3D capable screens.

Seriously? There's a lot. Rise of the Tomb raider, mankind divided, mirrors edge catalyst, Titanfall 2, Shadow of war, gears of war 4...etc.

I keep hearing about this but prices over here are completely unchanged and cards are always in stock in stores here. I think I just got a business idea. Anyone who wants to buy a new card, pm me. :p

Biggest hardware store here has at the moment 0 1070s, 0 1080s, 1 (one) 1080Ti (the wateblocked Aorus at ~1100 euros)... so yeah, it's bad alright.

That's insane. Over here we sell it for 27,500NT (765 euros) and it's in Stock everywhere.

Yeah, and like 2 days ago they had single 1070 in stock which was more expensive than a 1080 was at launch, and it sold... and to think that I sold my 1070, when 1080Ti launched, for basically less than half the price I could get for it right now. :(

    There's a ton of games that can't maintain 60fps
