I'm almost sure posts here on Guru3D have some characters number limit so no way there will be enough space to list all of my graphics cards i.e. video cards I had owned on my PCs so far but let me try to count few of them from ancient PC XT/AT era, few real 3D cards years later and... meh, nevermind.

Early Hercules mono cards, some Trident cards for (iirc) ISA slots, Cyrus Logic 5428 card for VESA Local Bus (had a 486DX2 66MHz backthen OCed to 80MHz iirc), S3 Trio 64+ 1MB VLB iirc (soon paired with Miro Highscore Voodoo 1 6GB, later paired with Creative Voodoo 2 12MB and later two of these in SLI), most Voodoo cards from Voodoo 1, 2 and 3 generation (except Bashee, I hate it).... and few hundreds cards later. Never owned any Matrox cards backthen, they were way too much overpriced here. Guesy my brain would start to melt if I try to remember all of my graphics cards in decade and half later, probably more than 300, guess around 100 to 150 I'm still keeping in my PC HW collection, probably all of them are still fully operative.

Most fun times with PC graphics cards: first 3Dfx Voodoo 1 & 2 gen 3D accelerators, backthen Glide API was so much superior than anything else on the market, hell I could even OC all of my Voodoo (1) and 2 cards straight from the drivers!

Had to mention that prior to my early PC days I had owned (still I am) C64 and Amiga 500 so for ancient Gurus here who remember those happy days I don't have a need to explain how crappy CGA, EGA and first VGA PC cards and their graphics "capabilities" were compared to Amiga's superior graphics (and sound of course) capabilities: PC graphics was nothing more than crap backthen.

    Good old days...

Well , I will name only the ones that I remember, the very old ones from the 90s I can't since I was too much of a noob back then (but I'm pretty sure I had some RivaTNT and early nvidia low end cards at some points).

    Anyway:

MSI GeForce FX 5200 (what a POS lol, but hey, it was all I could afford when I build my first rig)
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (got this soon after I got my hands on more money, a true elder GOD among GPUs)
Leadtek GeForce GTX 6800 (when nvidia started to get good again)
Leadtek GeForce GTX 6800 GT or Ultra (I did have the simple AGP iirc 6800 initially and then upgraded to the flagship that's all I can remember) edit - it was a GT, I actually still have to box but not the card itself lol.
BFG GeForce GTX 8800 Ultra (what a BEAST!)
    Asus GeForce GTX 280
    2x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 580s
2x MSI Ligthning GeForce GTX 680s
2x MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 970s
    MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 1070
    MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 1080Ti

Funny how I came back to MSI after so many years and stuck with it, the logo and content of that FX 5200 was waaaay different from the minimalist package we have today. I'm not saying it wasn't bloated, because it was, but at the same time it was pretty cool to get all those CDs with games and software and other things all in a huuuuge ass box for an otherwise low-end crap card. :p

You had a broken GPU or bad driver install if the 6870 was slower then a 4870. 6870 was as fast as 2 4870.

I can't remember quite well but i remember for sure that after the 4890 i wrote down my fps and when i got the 6870 months later i noticed it was way slower than the 4890 and
it was around the 4870 which made no sense. Thinking back on it now i guess the core 2 quad i had was probably bottlenecking the 6870.

My q6600 @ 3.75 was honestly barely enough even for HD 5700 in even Bad Company 2 and cpu bound games. So that really could be why for you.
