There's a host of voltages that can cause game freezes.

So...I'm on a 6700K. Is there any worthwhile upgrade for gaming specifically, outside of the 8 series? The 7800x seems interesting? What's that socket? x299? 2066?

    Z390 + 8core in H2 2018,

or in 2019 IceLake 8core.. probably DDR5 by then.
Imo no rush, get faster ram if bellow 3GHZ and newer gpu next year :D

2066 is the socket. X299 is the chipset. 7820x is the minimum I would go in that platform for gaming (considering you already have z170 and 6700k). The 7800x has very poor gaming performance caused by how Intel disabled two cores. IMO x299 is too expensive for gaming.

I might have to do the same thing. Just GPU.

Thanks for the head's up. Seems the 8700k is the only way up. I skipped the 7700k, too minimal of gains and the temps are terrible.

sorry if I'm OT but I wonder how the new i3-8350K does?...its 4core like the i5-7600K yet priced lower?

Maybe I/We should start a thread about budget gaming computers!

I have no issue talking about any of the coffee lake CPU’s in here. It would make it a easy reference. That i3 is impressive but it’s priced a bit high IMO. I’d rather spend the littl extra and get the 8600k.

I picked up my stuff yesterday. Availability said "sometime December", but they sent me a pickup note just two days after ordering :D Still rebuilding the machine & looking forward to see what's up with it :)

On a positive note, it looks like Win10 handles hardware swap outs without having to be reinstalled, as long as your license is linked to your Microsoft account, and not a local account.

    Thank God for that. lol

I really don't feel like reinstalling everything.

Got all the new parts delivered, and installed.
    -8700K
-ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero mobo
    -16gb GSkill TridentZ 4000 mem
-Corsair Hydro Series H80i v2 cpu cooling.

She runs like a dream, running at 4.7ghz turbo. Windows is definitely snappier, and more responsive.

Letting it break in a bit before pushing voltages, and clock speed.

But so far, a very happy camper.

What clocks, temp and vcores are you getting stable on your 8700k's? (all cores that is)
Mine is kinda strange. It can do 5 ghz, but then i have to bump the voltage near 1.5!
But it is very stable on 4.8@1.28v and now i run 4.9@1.31v and hitting around 75-80c . (79 max on two cores after an hour of stress testing)

Edit: got stable 5 ghz at 1.36 but it start to thermal throttle with my h100i.

It showing up as Kaby Lake in Core Temp (not sure why), but it displays correctly in CPU-Z.

Anyhoo...here are the temps/voltage at 5ghz all cores, idle and under load.

Nice. I would have to diddle around a bit to get 5 ghz stable another time. Running it now on 4.8 to test how low i can push the vcore.

1.23v for 4900? That is .. really impressive. Is it stable? If so it must be a golden chip. What do you need for 5?
