At first I was like "I don't think DDR4 prices changed that much..." and then I realized I couldn't have been more wrong. I bought 16GB of DDR4 at 3GHz with a CL of 15 back in November for about $80 USD. The same product at the same store is now $123. Yikes, I sure dodged a bullet there. $43 is often enough to increase the performance tier of another product.
Fabricated excuses and cartels under the table to increase the profit margins. Create a technical excuse so the public won't object and start the milking. Just like with the HDDs and Monitors some years ago.
Why change the process to one that produces worst results wile you can't even keep up with demand of the current process? What the hell...
Well I don't think they intentionally went to 18nm expecting it to yield worse results. I'm guessing they upgraded their factories, rather than build an additional one, in which case they can't go back. So, they're stuck with production being worse for the time being.
So why isn't Hynix swooping in and cleaning up with their 20nm if they're having no problems delivering at all? Sounds like a cartel to me...
My quad channel DDR3 1886 still pulls Skylake dual channel 3200MHZ bandwith and speeds. Just wish my motherboard would stop being a picky biznatch and oc my ram. It did 2200mhz in my old X79 board.
When I bought my current DDR3 dimms they were as cheap as hair combs. Though, it looks like I'm not going to upgrade until Pinnacle Ridge. There's plenty of time for them to get cheaper.
I noticed the higher prices when i had to pay for my current RAM... And i´ve read somewhere that motherboards prices are also expected to rise in the next months...
I remeber when I made my 920 system and bought 6gb of DDR3 at 1600mhz it was 240$ DDR4 16gb at 2400mhz is still cheaper
Yeah, think I am putting off my next CPU upgrade until RAM drops a lot in price. Today's prices are nuts. Aiming for at least 64GB RAM for my next system, the 32GB I have now is nice but I do find myself bouncing off its limitations frustratingly often...
There was a point when 1GB DDR400 was $100 for 1 stick. That sucked trying to upgrade from 1GB DD400 with 2 512 sticks to 2GB. My mobo then only had 2 dims. So I said eff it, sold the board. Bought a 4 dim board, and put 2 more 512s in it. It was still $50 cheaper that way. 1GB wasnt enough to game on with Vista X64 in 2006 when the beta2 dropped. In 2015, I paid $115 for my current ram.
The 3200C14 2x8GB GSkill Tridentz picked up when Rysen was released was $170 now $180 for the same kit. SSD prices increased more. Chalked up to global inflation; "global" economy, "global" effects.

I remember those kinda days well, had to opt for less RAM than that for more money too. Was a somewhat painful birthday present that didn't feel like good value, but my PC was demanding more memory... I Think I paid about £170 for my current 4x 8GB DDR3 G.Skill Trident 2400 RAM some time back. Feels like a lot more bang for the buck than when I was a kid, even for those DDR4 prices!
