Hi all,

First, Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it, and happy holidays to everyone in general.

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, but I still haven't found a proper answer, anywhere.

Anyway, I bought MSI GeForce GTX 970 4G Gaming 4 GB about a year ago, and almost all 3D games stutter when I play. Some more, some less.

I haven't been able to find any proper answer regarding a potential workaround, if there is any.

Apparently, that happens because the card uses 3.5 GB of speedy GDDR5 VRAM, and 500 MB of a very slow VRAM. And when the data transfers to that slow RAM, the game stutters. If I'm close enough with that answer.

Is there a fix of some kind?

The problem isn't related to GTX970.

I have the same card and do not have this problem.

 

Any ideas what this issue could be related with? PSU? RAM?

 

I have this problem when i play games that use a lot of vRAM like Wildstar Ultra textures, Rise of the tomb raider Ultra textures or now recently with Watch Dogs 2 Ultra textures too we had to choose the R9 390 back in the day.

I dont have any stutter problems with other games though, even with the old Shadow of mordor + HD textures. So maybe you can try cleaning drivers with DDU or install Windows in a secondary drive just to test.

 

Try to give us more information about the problem.

I suggest to make a video while playing a game and running msi afterburner with riva tuner statistic server with GPU and CPU usage, temperatures and etc turned on.

 

Okay, I have recorded a video with two games where the stutter/performance dip occurs. FIFA 17 and The Division (DX11).

In FIFA 17 you'll see a slight stutter (sometimes it can be more severe), while in The Division, there's a full stop.

Also, I play FIFA 17 at 2160p, while The Division at 1440p, but I scaled the video to 1080p in Vegas.

What virus programe do you use.

Plus have you tried playing off line to see if the games tutter, with fifa anyway.

 

Around 68°C, while the CPU is around 75°C in The Division.

While the stutter occurs, the card temp dips to 50.

 

windows xbox DVR thingy is off?

 

I think that problem is hard drive related.
What hard drives you have ? Where are games installed ?

 

Intel SSD 180 gigs, Seagate 500 gigs and Hitachi 1 TB. Some games are installed on Seagate, and some games on Hitachi. So I believe HDDs are not the case. Then again, who knows. They're kind of old-ish.

I updated all the outdated drivers before I recorded the video, but it's still the same.

Turned off Xbox DVR on pokyeah88's suggestion. Will check out if that makes any difference.

 

Try to move The Division on the SSD drive , remove Sata Cables from other two drives and try again.
-If the problem continues , try with another Sata cable to ssd.

Looking at the video looks like latency problems. Lots of noise popping where it lags.

 

Try using some sort of hardware monitoring application with on screen display or logging for multiple parameters frame rate, GPU temp, load, and memory usage, CPU temp and usage in game.
This will give you some useful troubleshooting data.
The system event log might show something, it usually doesn't but its worth checking.

Isolate the issue making sure to close any background apps or processes that may be loading the CPU or RAM.
In-game overlays such as curse have caused issues for me in the past.

Its possible if the game uses some sort of streaming from disk (for example Diablo 3, Obduction) that it could cause stuttering on a slower hard disk.


I've never had stuttering issue with my 970, but the games I play rarely to never exceed 3GB GPU memory usage at 1440p. I also have multiple SSD and hard drives.
I imagine the 3.5GB issue should cause a mild frame rate dip, not such a serious stutter.

no stuttering issues with my 970, watch dogs 2, dishonored 2, and pretty much any game i've played on it runs fine. you will need to do OSD testing and report back more details if you need help.

 

Looks like something is interfering with the gameplay. What background processes are you running?

Also, do the problems also occur when you set the texture quality to a lower level? That way you can see if it's the 3,5gb thing or not. If you still get it at lower than 3,5gb, it's most likely something else.

But still, I don't have issues like this if vram usage goes past 4gb. Performance will be lower yes, but not weird stutters like this.
