The GTX 1070 Thread

MSI 1070 here,

every time my gpu goes above 2ghz, it locks up. Any solutions?

Vram clocks fine to +750mhz.

core on the other hand, won't go beyond +50mhz. New to nvidia gpus, so not much experience with overclocking them.

Thought it would be simple, powerlimit to max, and core like everyone else +100mhz. Using afterburner btw.

 

I think I'm in love with this card. Over 2000 on the core and 9000 effective on the memory without even breaking a sweat and it's been 90 degree weather here, completely silent. Craps all over my previous 7970 CF in every conceivable metric. Nvidia profile inspector has a dizzying amount of options to tinker with, Assetto Corsa with 4xSGSSAA looks and runs like a dream. Goodbye AMD dx11 CPU overhead.

 

I just moved from a 390X over to a 1070 FE (EVGA box). I have noticed my scores in several benchmarks seem to be a bit higher than some reviews, even though those reviews are often using X99 systems as the test platform vs my Z170. Checked GPU-Z and noticed the boost is hitting 1840-1880, rather than the specified 1683. That normal for these cards? Is the boost an approximate?

Pardon me if this has been discussed and I missed it. I have been out of team green since my 580.

 

That boost is normal. Many cards operate higher than specs list.

I'm interested to see how the upcoming 1060 and 1050 compare to AMD, as those are the competitively priced cards.

I am getting a sub 30 fps on my MSI 1070 GTX X in GTA V @4k

I see everyone's benchmark results are showing like 50 fps in that game at 4k, why am I getting much lower fps? I am not capped at 30fps due to 30hz monitor either, it does 60hz at 4k.

Latest drivers, using all highest settings in GTA V except all AA turned off.

1st run. Stock CPU. I just clocked my card to 2088, the memory to 4577 (9154). Core dropped a hair to 2076 during the bench. I cranked fan to 100% and it never got above 56c (hot day here too).

I just discovered that I can't seem to figure out how to overclock my CPU in my new board, stuff is greyed out. I need to see what's up with that. I could run it at 4.6 or 4.7ghz for a few benches but I suspect the score won't rise much. 6300-6350, maybe...

 

Maybe check the settings in the nvidia control panel. Try taking control of the game's vsync setting from there and turn it on/off/fast, etc to see how it reacts.
You should be getting higher framerates than that at 4K.

 

I just ran it at 3840x2400 (slightly higher than 4k), fps range 37-62 averages between 40-55 in benchmark. In-game driving around 45-50+ fps. My gfx options are all maxed-out, no AA except 4x AA on reflections, max advanced options except the frame one is off.

Maybe cpu difference? I know GTA:V can have big fps difference between 4790k and 6700k.

Okay first of all, get to your most stable clock speeds. I had mine at:

Core Voltage % = +100
Power Limit % = +126
Core Clock = +106 MHz
Memory Clock = +666 MHz

(I could overclock memory to 850MHz and still have no crashes or artifacts, but since we don't have a temperature reading of it, and performance doesn't increase that much at that level, I leave it at +666).

So anyway, that was my daily overclock. I could never go past +106 MHz on the core (which equated to 2088 MHz while gaming). So from this point, you press CTRL + F on MSI AfterBurner to get the curve:

Click on the point in the graph where it corresponds with 1093 mV on the x-axis, which should say +106 in my case (2088MHz on the y axis) and drag it up to +130, which equates to 2112 MHz in my case. This automatically drags the last few points up with it anyway to correspond. I leave the graph at that and apply the settings.

PS: I know you didn't need a detailed explanation, it's just in case anyone else wanted this information.

 

That is 150mhz more than my card is doing. Mine just stops at 1936mhz, no amount of i overclock i try would get it beyond. It keeps crashing even with +50mhz on the core with pl on max and corevoltage at 100%.

Do i have a bad chip?

Vram does 700mhz with ease.

 

Yeah man, you have a bad chip. I answered you @overclock.net just now. Sad really. By the way, I remember you on the AMD side of the forum. I had a 280X, my GTX 1070 is the first nVidia card I've put in my personal PC for over a decade.

Very happy with it thus far.

 

Blackfyre oh familiar face from oc.net Having 126% power limit on your msi is so damn nice man! Even though i'm very-very pleasant with my palit, but it's 114% power limit is a huge difference in regard to OC...

 

Yeah I only started using my account @overclock.net recently. I've been a long-term member here, but the community for the GTX 1070 is larger over there.

Sooner or later someone will unlock the voltage on the GTX 1070 and create a BIOS for all of us to use. Probably with 150% Power Limit too.

Right now though I am very satisfied with the card, getting 2101 MHz playing the Witcher 3 (which is modded like crazy for me, looks truly epic) after using the Voltage/Frequency curve.
