well, since 14nm and 16nm have 20nm interconnects, its just the finfets that are 14/16, i have to wonder...

Totally plausible. Even tho the chip only eats some 110 watts and the rest of the board eats that 40+ watts which is all sorts of silly also.

And we have to remember glofo and samsung ain't exactly known for making big gpu chips. Even tsmc has issues at times and it's their specialty.

    How many chips they produce?

    SGI GTX 1981
    IBM
    Motorolla 1981

    But for Gaming:

    1. ATI 1985
    2. Cirrus Logic 1986
    3. Trident 1987
    4. S3 1989

    etc.
i will upload larger image (ok it is Extra Large )

Here you all Have it ->

AMD was first company to create CPU's early '70 or late '60
Those CPUs/chips was for airplanes !

And gentleman ! People here have REAL RX 480 and it work as intended !
    are you 7? ;-)

no, CGA (IBM) was before ati...

I had one for my 8086

    Color Graphics Adapter - IBM.

    read your own chart.

I have AMIGA 500 & 4000 with add ON + HDD 80MB in my attic, along with Magnavox Odyssey (this is my first console ever my father give it to me in 1975? or so), ATARI XL, N64, PS1, PS2, Atari Jaguar.
So i have also Old PC with ISA and with AGP
    I have also Virge 4MB, S3 and old GTX 285 PCI-e

    youngster...

    i started on Sinclair ZX80, Atari 800, PET, Vic20, C64, IBM 8086, and Motorola 8600

I was already on my 5th computer by the time the Amiga came out.

Intellevision, Atari 2600, and Coleco/Adam for consoles

The Oddesy was barely a console, it was just a box that displpayed large blocks on the screen...lol

This additional Power will be solved by HBM 2 and non-blower cooling systems.
AMD went for 110W GPU as final thing because they needed to start selling at reasonable performance point.
But those demos they had GPU comparing to nVidia and were power efficient, they run it in controlled environment with GPU @850MHz and 0.8375V.
Apparently that is more than enough for gaming notebooks.

From that comparison AMD increased clock by nearly 50% and voltage by 30%.
I am sure everyone can understand that power consumption is brutally affected by such increases.

And your quarrel about "GPU" pioneering. Name itself is coined by nVidia. :D

    Yup 256 or 16 colour?
Lol but true GPU are Virge/ATI and S3...

In time of x386 i was on Amiga (no good games on PC that time)
My First PC was x486 16MB RAM with 4MB GPU -> Wolf then DOOM and Then -> Quake ! and then Quake 2 on my VooDoo 32 or 64MB, dont remeber now...

    As for RX 480:
Its possible to run it on 1.086V with Booster: 1285MHz clock !
And average in Game (GPU only, FPS Cap to 60) is no more than ~90-107W

Now im waiting for Big Polaris (~300USD/€ price)

Some where saying that would be dual card, that would be horrible.

1.086v and 1285mhz = 980 range with total power draw being around 140 range then?

That would be horrible indeed... I think RTG learned their lesson when they released ATI Rage Fury MAXX.

Some time ago there was an picture of upcoming PowerColor Devil card. That did hint dual Polaris 10.

But one day in future AMD can make return of multi-GPU systems by designing GPU as split unit which would be interconnected by some pins. Connection would disable part of one GPU and other would take full control of both. Masking them as one GPU.
Wires themselves have nearly 0 latency. So it is doable. Especially since we already have tech like interposer where yo have thousands of pins in small area.

Only problem is way they would ensure that both chips would tick at exactly same rate otherwise that connection would need some kind of buffer which would introduce some latency.
But for 1st generation of such thing, it would be still far superior to anything we have today.

"Then put it into basket for slave GPUs."

This leak from Cargo Hong-Kong is Single-GPU.
It will be so called RX 490 or as i like to say about it - Big Polaris ;-)
Rumors are: 490 will be min. 30-50% faster than today Fiji-Fury
Today Fury not benches from last Year lol

    I really hope for 8GB HBM_1 rev.2 (Lower Latency)

But as always we need to wait for more Substantial proof.
    Now its only leak.
Truth is the Biger Polaris exist, but what it will be?

To be that much faster it would need to be same amount of shader cores with 1300-1400 core clock or tad more cores with lower clocks.

Of course with plenty more rops and tmus.

Is there going to be a larger Polaris GPU? I was under the impression the RX480 was a full Polaris 10.

Could AMD tape out a larger GPU and get it through all proper testing and production to sell by the end of the year? Polaris 9?

Vega is larger but it's already taped out for HMB2. Does AMD just throw Vega out a bit early as RX490/5/x?

So AMD has no answer for the GP104 till end of year, and If we believe the rumors Nvidia will launch GP102 at end of year (I would expect that to be a 12.5/13Tflop card).

What a horrible time to be looking to upgrade. :(

    Till September/October
I think that October Fest will be GPU's Fest
Big Polaris and maby Real Pascal 10.80Ti with nVlink etc.
    We shall see :)

What BIG Polaris? 10 is the largest known and is fully unlocked in 480?

Do you have a source on this "BIG" Polaris? Or is it just hope?

Vega on paper looks to only contend with GP104. If that happens even a cut down GP102 will be $1500.

Vega will be expensive by default due to HBM2.

    could be some unknowns.

The reality is we dont know a damn thing.
