Im having a big issue right now.. and just need help seeing my options from every standpoint.
    Major questions:
will I be ok getting a 1070, or should suffer and wait more for a GTX1080 and if i do get a 1070 will it be a worthwhile upgrade from a GTX 980?

I have now been without a Graphics card for about a month and a half. I only have about 460$ saved currently and im coming from a reference GTX 980.

I am really afraid of a hasty move to get a 1070 BUT the only reason im willing to think about a 1070 is the 256 bus and the higher clock speeds and im sick of waiting .... i want to try 4k gaming but am more focused at 1080p.. 1080p is my absolute standard.

Well, you do say you are coming from a 980, but you don't have it anymore?
I couldn't go more then a week without a GPU in my system, so if you can't wait any longer getting the 1070 should be a no brainer.

That said, performance is about 15-25 FPS higher on the 1070 vs the 980. So it's still more then a side-grade. And at 1080p? Getting the 1080 for that resolution may be a waste of money.

But it still boils down to your own preference. How much patience do you have left? If you are willing to wait and save for the 1080, why not do so? Could always get a new monitor down the road, or use DSR. Either option isn't terrible, in your situation no one would fault you for getting either card.

    I'm waiting on 1060 vs 480 benchmarks myself....would love a 1070/1080 though....

I'm not a fan of the 1070 I think if you can get a really good 980Ti second hand you would be really pleased with it. And you can always sell it when you have a bit more money for a 1080 - or 1080Ti down the line

Seriously grab a second hand 980Ti which does 1400mhz+ with a good aulity, quiet cooler and you're onto something...

Just check the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X review and see how the 1070 smokes the 980 at 1080p resolution:
    Rise of TR (dx12): +48%
    DOOM(GL): +30%
    The Witcher 3(dx11): +43%
You should expect even greater performance gaps vs Maxwell as DX12 matures.

If you need a card right now and have the money for a 1070...man, it's a no-brainer.

If you are only gaming at 1080p, then I would stick with a 1070. If you want to game at 4K, 60fps + you should definitely go for 1080. What games are you playing? I have asus strix 1080 sli and in the witcher 3 I get 52fps @4K ultra settings with only 1 card active and a solid 60+ fps with cards in sli. But I do have a g-sync compatible monitor and even if my framerate is only 40-45fps (as is the case in "the division" when cards are not in sli), it is AS smooth as if I play the game at 60fps. My advice, get 1 x 1080 and buy yourself a good 4K g-sync compatible monitor. I think I went a bit far in getting 2 x 1080's, but at least I should not have to upgrade my system for a while. Hope this helps...

^like he said - if you want to do 4K get a GTX 1080. No other single GPU solution can handle that now so it's a no brainer if gaming at 4K is your main concern (as it was for me).

I plan on going with a 1070 when prices stabilize. It will most likely be the 1070 MSI Gamer X,
unless something more sexy comes along. It also matches my motherboard colors for extra bling factor.

The prices of the 1080 is way out there and soon to be replaced with the Ti and Titan Pee.
I expect the 1080 prices to change quite a bit when said cards comes along.

I am a 1080p rez peasant and plan on staying that way until 4K is viable.

1080 will be also "needed"/better for 1080p 144hz (fps) and more so if 1440p. Especially in heavey AAA games.

But again, 1080 prices are inflated tbh. I would say for myself at least, 1070 now OR 1080ti when it comes out.

Simple comparison you can do is to devide 19500 over your 980 actual firestrike graphic score@1080p. If you get 125+ you'll feel some improvement in actual gaming.

MSI Gaming Z just was announced lol just an excuse to put 20$ more on the card when it can already with the gaming get to 2050 core lol. My Gaming X is coming tomorrow and I'm gaming at 1080p, if I was gaming at 1440p I'd probably pick a 1080. Good thing I'm not.

Im eyeballing three cards right now (i wanted a 1000 series card really but here are the three cards im investigating:
    1.
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980Ti 6GB XTREME https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BMJ0Z1Q/ref=crt_ewc_title_gw_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

    2.
ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 8GB ROG STRIX OC Edition
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HDUVJ1I/ref=crt_ewc_title_gw_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A31SE6OK8K4AUC

    3.
EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GX5YWAO/ref=crt_ewc_title_gw_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

The Problem between these cards is that I actually really am interested in the Gigabyte card (a 980 Ti with RGB lighting like the new cards plus its OCed) but am afraid of being stuck on old hardware. I am sick of buying cards that are pretty outdated i bought a Regular GTX 980 just this year in Feb. for example (mostly cus im not very financially able to jump on new hardware as its released)...... and also, a 980Ti can be trumped by a friggin 1070 wich is insane for the price considering.

then the other problem is between the other two cards... I absolutely LOVE strix cards.. my first was a Strix 970 beautiful silent card and it was powerful i just astonishing quality of the card was insanely awesome..

BUT, EVGA really caught my eye this time with the Custom ACX 3.0 cooler (normally i stay away from EVGA because of thier lackluster somwhat awkward looking Coolers. (just my opinion BTW)

so maybe if you all can help me between these three cards?!?!

If you've had a good experience with Strix in the past, why not go with that one?

In stock at newegg atm, 100 less than amazon price.

The evga card is probably great too but aesthetically I find it hideous. Looks like an 80's ghetto blaster.
