Dear god Hilbert your are hard at work thx for this review a very nice card from Msi and lovely cooler design.

At page 9 you have made a slight mistake highlighting a 1070 instead of the 1080 in the temp graph.

Cooler with "balls of steel" :D. Shame with 10 power phases and superior cooling doesnt OC much better than FE.

I spotted it this morning for € 750, but due to low volume availability retailers will easily inflate that to € 800 in most shops.

Hmm the 1080 / recent drivers really seem to like OpenGL more than I thought.
    Great review, thanks Hilbert!

Dont say I told you so.. But nah all were like bla bla.

Even Chispy said it later when the OCers started to play with it.. 2ghz is as good as it gets, custom will be cooler thats about it.

So now all we need is for AMDs RX480 to be as powerful as they claim and keep it's low price and have good availability. Otherwise the prices of these cards will stay ridiculous ..

I guess Maxwell as the 'end' of the node was at it's best, we will see OC headroom increasing when current nodes improve in manufacturing I think.

But I seriously don't understand why they want to hit 2.2 with it besides the true overclockers, it's already a damn big jump from ~1.6 max with Maxwell's cards. Performance seems to be okay... so what about it?

Still, I am looking forward to what the people can get out of better power delivery for instance. The 1070 and 1080 will probably get revisions over time because they will stick with us until 2018 I guess, 2017 being big Pascal's year.

I like. For me, it's a toss up between this MSi card and the EVGA 1080 FTW model. I'm leaning towards the EVGA card.

Hilbert, will you be doing a review on the FTW? ...still no love from EVGA?

Still trying to see how you guys are saying this is underwhelming?!?!

Look at this card compared to the 780Ti! It's quantum leaps faster.

    Great review as always boss.

Do you know when this might hit the US for preorders? I've only seen it on European websites so far, and I really want to try to grab one of these in the first round of shipments.

Additionally, the information you have about the backplate/RGB LEDs seems inconsistent. MSIs website shows that the gaming X has a backplate as well as the RGBs, and in your paragraph titled "X or Z ?" you say that one of the few differences is that the Z will have an RGB system, and then you continue in the same paragraph to write about the RGB system that the X has. On the next page, you also show the photoshoot which reveals a backplate after it is implied previously that the X does not include one. Not trying to be a jerk, just wanted to point this out.

    Great informative article, thanks!

It's not a bad card but the overclocking is terrible which lets 980Ti OC pretty much get on par with it.

And how can you compare it to the 780Ti which is several generations old? :D a more fair comparison would be to the 980 and there it does a great job.

The 780ti is not several generations old.

Incredibly unrealistic expectations, as has become the norm.

Pascal seems more of a Maxwell small node refresh than a totally new architecture. The core efficiency doesn't appear to have improved from Maxwell to Pascal unlike the Kepler to Maxwell jump. However there is more energy efficiency and the smaller node is slowing for much higher frequencies.

The full size GK110 was top dog only two years ago and now a 104 based card is twice as fast. That is a bit ridiculous and people are complaining.
