Since when does "clock for clock" matter anyway?

Nobody cares about 1080 vs 980ti clock for clock because the 1080 will run upwards of 700mhz faster than a 980 in most people's rigs.

There is no 1070 bench that's leaked. He's basing that assumption of the idea that 1070 is the same arch as 1080 but without GDDR5x. So if the 1080 is slower clock for clock the 1070 will definitely be slower, clock for clock. That being said, it's not really relevant -- at least for the 1080, because it hits clocks that typical 980Ti's can't. As for the 1070, the MSRP, if it ever hits that, is significantly lower than the $650 the 980Ti was.

Also there are multiple improvements under the hood that will offset the disadvantages of splitting the SM, which is the main reason why people think its slower clock for clock.

    Agreed.

I'm looking at the 1070 and it's pretty comparable to the 980 in some ways.

    • same amount of CUDA cores
    • same memory bus
    • same type of ram

Only... the 1070 will most likely be able to hit 2000mhz on the core, if not more. Now imagine a 980 running 2000mhz, it wouldn't be far off a stock 980ti, imo. (up to 1440p anyway).

This is before you factor in Pascal optimisations, reduced process node from 28nm to 16nm, meaning less heat and hopefully even quieter card. Plus it has double vram of the 980.

So we have a £350 gpu that will most likely be a few % shy of 980ti or thereabouts, with double vram, low power draw (who cares anyway) and one that will run cool and quiet.

Now the 1080 with GDDR5X and more CUDA cores will obviously be even faster. That's how I see it.

Clock for clock doesn't really matter. Nobody will be running their 1070/1080 at 1400-1500mhz, right?

Clock for clock is pretty useless, what you really wanna look at is SP for SP, clock for clock.

An R9 Fury is faster than a 980ti clock for clock; 3500 shaders vs 2816

I honestly think the 1070 will be limited by memory bandwidth, as high as it may clock...

Think it should do fine at 1080p and 1440p most of the time.

Well he said that the 1070 should be faster than the 980Ti in all games. If you overclock both, I'm not sure that will stand. Clock for clock the 1070 should be much slower and it has 1/3 of the memory bandwidth. To get to 980Ti performance you have to get it to get at least 33% higher frequencies than the 980Ti, and that can't offset the memory bandwidth disadvantage it will have as well as the 64 vs the 96 ROPs of the Ti.

In other words, it will be very close, faster in some, slower in others, but not really a replacement for the 980Ti in my book. Still, impressive for the price tier.

    nah, it won't be a 980ti replacement (the 1070).

Thinking about it, if at 1440p the 980ti is 5-10% faster at 1070 launch, I'd still go with the 1070, even if they both cost the same.

I'd kill myself if 1070 will be replacement for 980ti regarding performance :D ...I bought 970 of mine on april the 18th, for 350$. Imagine how I felt at may the 6th, when 1080/ 1070 was announced...like a complete looser :D

Oh man, that sucks. The 1070 will be mighty close. Basically, it's a 980 only running at around 2000mhz on the core. So quite a step up from 970 and a fair bit faster than the 980. Performance will be just short of the 980ti is my guess (when both overclocked, I'm guessing 10% in favor of 980ti).

Was it new? If so then that really sucks, I mean the card was like 1.5 years old when you got it, should have figured a replacement is right around the corner. Never pay full price for a card if it's not on release day.

As for the 1080 (and 1070), can't wait for the flood of reviews, and especially the AIBs in the coming weeks!

My body is ready for the reviews! Might even upgrade to the new card if it's worth it.

I have not upgraded anything in my computer for 4 years. I am pretty excited to be upgrading my GTX 670 and a 1920x1200 monitor to possibly 2 1070's and a 4k monitor. Should be a massive increase in graphics. Cant wait

I'd personally advise against SLI, IF the scaling is okay you'll get a decent framerate, but that's a huge IF these days. I went from SLI 970 @1500/8000 to a single Ti and couldn't be happier. Yeah it's slower until the game uses only one card, that's when you'll notice how underpowered SLI is.

So lets say 1k USD/EUR for the whole upgrade, which comes down to 250 a year which again its 20 USD/EUR per month.

Oh boy! You are in for a treat! :D

@ 2ghz on the core 1070 would be doing 8.2 tflops. Vs stock 980ti @ 6.5 roughly. So in some scenarios it should be faster for sure others maybe not.
