Surely the 1080 would make hardly any difference in those games? They are buggy and unoptimised, Throwing more power at them wont get a solid 60 at 1440p if the game its self needs work.
Either way its sure faster than 980ti and Titan X and when Overclocked it will give a nice perfomance boost thanks to its efficiency, 16nm FinFet is the huge improvement here over todays 28nm. Thats the main achivement, all future cards after this can now be further improved and fitted with more cuda cores etc based on 16nm and 14nm. So we are talking about 3-5 years at least with this tech from this year.
Like the Maxwell cards, Pascal will come with a large L2 cache which will have much higher bandwidth, plus the register file size is again much larger. What this means is that Pascal will have far greater internal bandwidth than previous GPUs, and not require as much VRAM bandwidth to have an enormous lead. Similar to the GTX 980 which has lower bandwidth than the GTX 780 Ti, but is faster; even at higher resolutions where you'd expect the greater bandwidth to come into play.
They didn't say anything about the architecture really. This looks like it is Maxwell on steroids. I hope they did something for better compute support. Now it looks amazing, the real test is around Feb/2016 when the big bro and Vega are out. If I hadn't baked my card three times already, I would wait until then.
I think the 1080 will have supply problems when they go on sale on 27th. Not sure NV have much GDDR5x on hand to sell them in the quantities they'd like. Which is why they are only offering the Founders Edition on the 27th with regular 1080 to follow at some future point. Price gouging will likely set in. Will be fun to watch.
Yah it of been would be awesome to have 11-12Gbps GDDR5X but it's not available yet.. Micron has just started sampling it a few weeks ago so likely another 4-6 months before it's in mass production. https://www.micron.com/products/dram/gddr/8Gb#/ Worth nothing from the micron catalog, 8Gbps GDDR5 is in production that is likely what we'll see on the GTX 1070. With HBM2 being very costly I don't think we'll see it on consumer products for a year or more... I'd guess the 1080Ti or whatever they want to call it will likely stick to GDDR5X with 384-bit bus using possibly 12GB memory. If they go that route could see ~528GB/sec using 11Gbps GDDR5X on 384-bit bus!
With this Founders edition only available on the 27th.. I get the feeling only the Nvidia Branded version will be available this month. I'm guessing can only be ordered directly from Nvidia's online store. Thus far all the board partners haven't put up anything on the GEForce 10 series. You'd think they would have something up if it's going to be available in a few weeks.
Founder edition is another name for reference card Oficial MSRP for reference card is 700USD 599 is only speculation on aftermarket cards price.I dont think aftermarket cards will be cheaper than reference..
Well based off it has 2560 Cuda Cores, it seems it's a cut-down GP100 Pascal chip using only 4 GPCs compared to 6 in GP100. Nvidia really just needs to publish the full specs on GP104 but this below seems very likely. At least based off the specs from GP100 and what they revealed last night for the GTX 1080. The GP100 Pascal Architecture is setup like this: Graphic Processing Clusters (GPCs): 6 Total Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs): 10 / GPC CUDA Cores (Single Precision): 64 / SM Double Precision Cores: 32 / SM Texture Map Units (TMUs): 4 / SM Raster Operators (ROPs): 2 / SM (This is a guess - Older architectures used 2:1 ratio TMUs:ROPs) So a cut down chip with 4 GPCs matches up the specs Nvidia did provide for the GTX1080. I kinda doubt they would do a completely different design for GP104 chip. GPCs: 4 SMs: 40 CUDA SP Cores: 40 x 64 = 2560 CUDA Cores DP Cores: 40 x 32 = 1280 Dual-Precision Cores TMUs: 40 x 4 = 160 TMUs ROPs: 40 x 2 = 80 ROPs Nvidia revealed the Boost Clocks, so we can figure everything else from that. As soon as i can get an eVGA SC version in my hands i will be putting my 980 Ti on ebay. The price of the 1070 has really limited what i can get for my 980 Ti though. Will probably look to get 300 for it. I really wanna see some real world benchmarks to see if the 1080 is gonna be that much faster than my 980 Ti.
At 6.5 or 9 TFs I think the cards will perform ok in compute op. But will be a problem with this early release because of GDDR5 or GDDR5X Vram. Power hungry (not the chip itself),heat and ofc the board is too long with this ancient Vram. The prices with GDDR5(x) are high. Next year,hopefully,they will release cards with HBM2 and then we will have a real performance (Nv or Amd) at the right price.
From what i saw so far 1080gtx has still 64 Rops. Imo this 1080gtx is just enough to cut it @ 1440p by latest and the greatest.. 980ti is like that @ 1080p stock boost 1164mhz, oc'ed 1400mhz+ that gap at 1440p pretty much looks irrelevant.:nerd: At least for someone owning 980ti etc

There is no way possible it has 64 ROPs. That would work out to 1.6 ROPs per SM, with the 40 SMs in GP104. Unless GP104 has no relation at all to Pascal GP100 architecture at all. Thus far Nvidia hasn't said how many ROPs are in Pascal, everyone is guessing.. But 64 doesn't make any sense based on what is known with the Pascal architecture.
Waiting for Gaming benchmarks first , i would like to go back to a single card setup if the performance is good enough for 2560x1440p@ 144hz
Reference GTX 1080 has one major weak spot: Single 8-pin PCI-E power connector. Not ideal for extreme overclocking.
Well those who intend to OC it a lot won't get a reference anyway. Wonder if the founder's edition will get more connectors and will it look any different than reference?
