GCN numbering is not that important. Anyone who saw GCN improvement map even once knows that there are many improvements in works and their release are bound to happen at different times.
And in many cases, released technology is improved again and again.

But, none the less, I like to mark GCN GPUs as members of particular generations due to certain big improvements which may not be felt at moment they are done.
Like Improved ACUs or that Tonga's IMC.

layout make it a standalone architecture.

I saw a table showing all the changes to Polaris function blocks vs Fiji/Tonga and that's the best indicator of changes really. They have version numbers for each subcomponent of the GPU, damned if I can word it in a way that'll bring up correct results on google though

 

No, GCN is architecture. Tonga and Fiji are different revision. While in general people classify both into GCN 1.2 (3.0), Fiji may have different improvements or miss something what AMD no longer deemed important.

It clearly states "Architecture GCN 1.x" down the list. GCN is the architecture. Polaris/Fiji/Etc are codenames for subsets of GCN chips. This isn't rocket science.
