We should aim for the lowest Voltage to prolong electrical components.

From the Overclock net thread, the guy charted several dozens of owners of Skylake CPUs with roughly 40-50% of them using voltage of 1.4 or higher to reach stability at certain OC level, while no one is reporting temperatures close to Skylake's thermal junction.

OK, you've "proved" that 1.39vcore doesn't cause degredation in less than 5 months.

 

So I'm a bit disappointed in the components I got. The pandora core is a pain in the ass to build in, no joke. The cable management behind the motherboard is truely terrible.

The Gigabyte motherboard lasted all of about a week before it stopped booting up. I exchanged it through microcenter for an Asrock Z170m-Pro4s. Which does not allow you to set the VCCIO voltage and it is stuck at 0.916v so you can't get above 4.5GHZ and of course that speed requires 1.36-1.37v to be stable.

Sigh, my cooling has so much more in it and I'm sure if I could raise the vccio I should be sitting on 4.6 at 1.37...

 

4.5 is a nice all day overclock, you wouldn't gain next to anything by going to 4.6 especially with just gaming, be happy with your 4.5 and you will never have to worry about degradation

 

4.5ghz at 1.275v is the best I could do. Even going to 4.6 takes considerably more voltage @ 1.340 and 4.7 takes even more. Diminishing returns I would say just for 100-200mhz .

Needless to say, I am pretty happy with a 1ghz oc.

 

So in conclusion 4.6/4.7 (1.35v max) if you're lucky,is a "safe" 24/7 OC on air? I didn't even try to OC mine yet since at stock speed my fps in gw2 doubled at least from my old 2500k @ 4.8 and with the 2500k i was using medium settings at the more cpu intensive options,while with this 6700k i'm using ultra. Pretty happy with it, other games i've tried also seem smoother but not that much of an impact like in mmos.

 

Yah just takes some testing... my i7-6700K will do 4.6Ghz at ~1.275v, using Adaptive Voltage.


My chips stock voltage is 1.26v, I could hit 4.5Ghz at stock voltage. I'd probably just see what you can hit at your stock voltage and go from there.

 

From what I see here v1.39 is the norm for 4.7GHz, because I am planning to upgrade to 6700K but I like to reuse my old cooler prolimatech megahalems, it is sufficient for v1.39?

 

So I'm giving my computer to my son and am building a new one. So far I have a 6700k and asus z170 a on the way.

 

I'm running 1.34V for 4.6Ghz OC on the 6600K, using adaptive voltage. I haven't tried to drop my voltage any lower to see how low I could go though. 4.7Ghz requires 1.38V, and I can do 4.8Ghz at 1.42V

 

For anyone with the same motherboard as myself , there's a new bios out today
and it has helped me reduce my voltage on the cpu with the same overclock i've been using of late 46 @ 1.275 now ,Before with bios f6 i was using 46 @ 1.32-1.35 .

It says that they have Improved DDR XMP compatibility with this bios update, plus there's been 8 beta bios from f6 to f7 (f6,f7a,f7b,f7d,f7e,f7g,f7j,f7k,f7r,f7) so i suppose there will be many fixes but gigabyte being gigabyte they don't list them all

all auto clocked with MSI own Gaming App
Pretty happy for now... Stable on 4 hours benching with OCCT and Prime95

No need to delve into clocking yet..

Before the newest BIOS, I could barely reboot without the POST failing saying the overclock wasn't successful (even and default 4200Mhz) because of incompatibilities with the memory modules using XMP ON

XMP support for early BIOS of Z170 boards has been problematic

 

6700K 4.7ghz using 1.39. Unfortunately cannot get it to run stable at 4.8ghz even upping the voltage to 1.44v is a no go....

 

Upgraded from a good old reliable i7 920 that sat at 4GHz comfortable since launch month. I have been very impressed with its longevity. However, I had some spare cash burning a whole in my wallet to decided to take the plunge and spunk a few hundred quid on some core component upgrades.

Eventually settled on a 6700k, some good paste and stuck 2x Noctua NF-F12 to extend the life of an old H80i AIO cooler. Needless to say all temps are down massively. Idles in the early-20s, 2 or 3 above ambient, and after an hour of Prime its in the early-50s, so very happy. Using the EFI PWM management I have the system running silent unless fully utilised, but even then I can hear the Corsair pump over the fans. The combination of new CPU, the paste and the new fans has is really very powerful in dissipating the heat out.

In terms of overclocking I haven't really found the need for more CPU performance, but it runs reliably in Prime at 4.45GHz auto-regulated.

Just fitted 3x Noctua NF-P14s and DEMCiflex to my Carbide Air 540 so I am quite confident I will be able to run an overclock like the one on my old 920 for many years to come.

 

Asus' bios version 1701 was horrible on my pc. The first time I installed it, it would bsod with code 1a seconds after reaching the desktop and when I reinstalled it, I was stuck with qcode 4F and a bricked PC i ended up restoring 1601 via flashback and all was well again. Wow.
