No, it's not. Why do you even bring 780 Ti in the discussion? It's slower, emits more heat, lacks latest NV and DX12 features, comes with less VRAM, gets less attention from Nvidia driver team, and is built on now old architecture. And same goes for 970 vs 780. Overclocking one card, and keeping the other card(one that's cooler!!) at stock settings serves no purpose, other than trying to make a baseless point. We all know how much you love your 780, but lets keep it real. "Free" 970 is hardly irrelevant. Coming from 780, both 970 and 980Ti are viable choices. Sure 980Ti is a better card, but that comes with a heftier price. What's irrelevant are 780 and 780 Ti; unless you already own them.
Tj did not even stayed within Guru3D like Darkest, but had to reach for the other website, which not only does not test 970, but wait for this... Shows 780Ti, losing ground to both 980, and 290X. Losing ground by not much in absolute terms, admittedly, but still measurable and even considerable when it comes to what's expected from driver performance improvements. And that was 6 months ago. I suspect 780/Ti owners should count themselves lucky if that trend has suddenly stopped.
TROLL somewhere else. @calculus Because 980gtx perf. says it all, 970gtx is slower by default. Not really relevant if its missing there or not. 980ti is the only real upgrade from last gen 780ti, 300e extra is worth it.
Of course 980Ti is the real upgrade. Of course 300€ extra are worthy! I got a GTX 780 right at launch (got it for 600€ June, 2013 - which was a good deal at the time). When GTX970 came out 1 and 1/2 year later, I sold my GTX780 for €300 and got the GTX 970 mainly because of its efficency. - at the time the performance was between 780 and 780Ti. The thing really runs cold and silent compared to the 780 I had before and my aging PSU fan hardly spins anymore. Now that drivers are mature, the 970 beats the 780Ti in most games but, not all (CryEngine games come to mind). Anyways, last month, I had the opportunity to add a second GTX 970 so I could test the SLi performance, and you now what? I hardly noticed the difference! I mean, the higher FPS were there, sure but, my games already ran smoothly with a single card and I play @ 1440p/100Hz with my overclocked QNIX 2710 Evo 2. Granted, I could pump up the shadows and foliage to 'Very High' in The Witcher 3 but, that was about it: I could set a few graphics settings up to max and play with AA a bit more. As far as actual gaming experience and smooth gaming are concerned, SLi brought nothing to my table. So, why do I still think selling a GTX970 and getting a GTX 980Ti for €300 (more) is still a wise thing to do? Well, the world doesn't end today and I don't expect a GTX 970 successor anytime soon... And when it eventually comes out, I don't think it will beat a GTX 980Ti, at least not by any significant margins.
the 970 mops the floor with the 780, but as an upgrade? all depends how much you sell the 780 for. to pay full price for a 970 from a 780, not worth it at all.

having a 980 myself i can say it's a bad choise, it's an overpriced card and you can buy a better card like the fury/furyX or the 980ti after all it's their prices are not that far. I bought mine because i was really needing an upgrade from an ati HD4890, and on september 2014 that was the only good card available, but now, i can say it's a no. The 970 is indeed more powerfull than the 780ti, saying that, if you buy the 980 a card that is already crushed by the 980ti you can probably be having a weak card when the 1070 cames out (and it's soon), and probably the 1070 will crush the 980ti as the 970 did with the 780ti. so wait until pascal comes out, choose the 970 and wait for pascal.
the RM650 is a decent unit and will be fine: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=363 but don't get hung up on 80+ certification means nothing if the 12v rail has too much ripple. seriously, the 970 is a very fair replacement. esp if you get the full warranty with it. sve your money for pascal, if you want.
