I still have it and I still play on occasion. I also have the precursor, "EarthSiege" which is simple yet quite a lot of fun. I still remember the first time the "PitBull" mech appeared out of a dust storm and scared the hell out of me as it was a 4 legged HERC that was quite enormous and awesome to see.

The guy that brought-up the Commodore 64 you just gave me a flashback- Nothing like loading-up your games on a audio tape huh? I was in complete shock the 1st time I fired-up the system! Wish I still had it today.

Yes...the tape cassette for the C64. I was well aware of it at the time and avoided it completely as nearly all games were available on 5-1/4" floppies. There was also a port on the back of the C64 where you could buy the game as a cartridge and just plug it in to load...similar to how USB thumb drives are used today but obviously nowhere near as fast.

It seems silly today but I used to get a thrill each time I loaded a new game in anticipation of what I would see. It usually took 2-3 minutes just for the splash screen to appear on the monitor. One of my favorites in this regard was a game called, "Hit the Beach". Others were "SkyFox" and "Rescue on Fractalus".

I chose to list them as there were hundreds of games developed long before the PC took over the market back in the early 90's. Many of them were the template by which many PC games were developed. A perfect example is the WW2 submarine simulator, "Silent Service" by MicroProse for the Commodore 64. It was released in 1984 and its basic design structure was the foundation of the much later PC sub sim series, "Silent Hunter" (first released by Strategic Simulations, Inc. and later by UbiSoft). Silent Hunter 3 and 4 (Atlantic and Pacific respectively) are amazing sub sims.

After skimming through this thread, it's very interesting to see the range of titles, but I think ultimately this is like asking, "What is your favorite song?"

Production values are at a point now where just like movies, music, and TV, games are as subjective and as varied as anything else. Everyone's taste is uniquely their own.

I'm pretty sure we were technically, "PC" gaming. The Commodore 64 and Atari 800 (as well as other models) were home based personal computers in the early 80s. They weren't limited functionality gaming consoles like an NES or an Atari 2600. As former Commodore/Atari gamers, we're just so old school that we pre-date all these gamer sub-genres. We used to just be called nerds or dorks. :nerd:

That's more or less how I view it, I was talking more about the horde of more modern console games which were listed. I've fond memories of messing around with the likes of my Spectrum when I was younger.

Couple of other PC games that came to mind for me recently:

Anno 1404 - a game I can sit and play for a few (dozen!) hours, leave for a few months then come back to and carry on like I never left. Civ 4 for me was the same but that game was a time eater. Start it on a Friday night, a few "just one more turn"s and all of a sudden it was Sunday night...

Sins of a Solar Empire will always have a sweet spot for me as well. I have literally played that game more than any other title ever. The tech trees, the almost infinite different ways of playing, the difficulty levels, playing on a utterly huge solar system map against some incredibly devious AI means you could find yourself either getting screwed over really quickly or rapidly becoming a demi-god in your local area.
