Looking to get, or closer to, 144hz on more games to take advantage of my fancy dancey non-gsync gaming monitor.

    Opinions?

I'm sorta in the same boat. I run at 100hz right now and get annoyed when my framerate is down in the 70s-80s and fluctuates. Was considering going TI just for ease of temps and overclocking, but at the same time don't wanna jump in quite yet.. would rather wait till this coming year.

that said, I plan on getting a new 34" ultrawide, so not sure how these 970sli will deal with that load :/

At this point, I'm thinking to just suck it up if rumors of Pascal being 2-10 times faster than current GPUs are even remotely true.

    2 970`s will be faster than 1 980 ti.

TK I know, yes, but then there's the whole single card vs sli argument.

Could just get a gsync monitor I suppose. This one's not even a year old yet the tho.

It depends on how the scaling is in the games you play and the price difference for each option. Personally speaking I'd lean toward selling the 970 and picking up a 980ti.

I would definitely take one 980ti over 970's.

Overall same performance, 6GB Vram (vs 3.5GB). Sell your card and go for it...

People still like to use the silly 3.5gb moniker since .5 runs slower than the other 3.5gb vram.

I haven't yet bumped into this limitation and I run at 1440p. Not sure if it will impact me when I go to 34" ultrawide, but I guess will have to make the decision once I get there.

I could very easily get myself a 980ti right now and break even after selling my 970s, but I just don't know if I have the will to go through the hassle for what will amount to a bit less performance overall.. with the potential of being better at a higher resolution.

BTW SpecChum, sorry if I'm stealing your thread a bit here.. just had this same thing on my mind today.

Im limited by 1.5gb, but the extra power that a second 580 brings makes up for it.... somewhat.

I mean 6gb ram is only going to make a diff is OP is playing over 1080/1440p. At those res' or under, that extra 970 is going to benefit more than a single 980ti.

In HH's 970 sli review, in Metro Last light, 970sli beats out a 980 by almost 15fps at 1440p.

I say go for a second 970 OP. My second 580 is the only reason ive been able to put off upgrading for so long. I've never really had any issues with sli other than the odd game engine simply not supporting it (IDtech for example, thats about it).

Then theres the price vs fps. A second 970 will be cheaper than a 980ti and you'll get more fps out of it.

Last, with dx12 reportedly to make it easier (i think) for devs to pool gpu vram, you could very well end up with 6+gb in the long run anyway. Those are the rumors so far.

No, not at all. Instead of acting so smart try to add something to my opinion, something helpful/useful for a change. You know, like others above you did...

To add to your "opinion", the 970 is a 4gb card. So your opinion is wrong.

No one makes a card with 3.5GB VRAM as far as I've seen.

I would go for the 980Ti especially if you see a G-Sync monitor in your future, as that will make the difference in raw performance even less visible on-screen. Aside from the difference, any SLi microstutter (if any), even if little, would become visible on the G-Sync monitor, so the single card is guaranteed to be as smooth or smoother at the same framerate. Regardless, I don't believe SLi still has microstutter showing up on G-Sync displays like early reports indicate.

Generally, when a single GPU is 60%-80% faster than one weaker card, going for a single GPU seems more sound.

I have a 144mhz monitor and run everything on it at max speed without probs on a single GTX 970. Is just the refresh rate - a better GPU isn't required.

Your first best option is to try and see if it's easy and reasonable selling your current 970. If you sell it at fair price then go and hit 980Ti.

Your second option would be to find another one 970 (same one I would prefer..IMO always better to have same brand's gpus) at fair price.

First option is best for future , second is best for now(and maybe a bit cheaper but in a year or so you won't even think of it..).

<I won't even start the differences about heat, power, some games don't like multi gpus etc, bottom line is that a single gpu doesn't really worth so much money IMHO but comparing single VS SLI if the performance is similar common sense say "go for single"..
well we gamers do what we'd like to do..right? Money is more or less the same..>

Why you don't listen. It doesn't fit the little mold you have made so you would forget. None of your posts are useful they are just flame bait.

Your opinion is not based on fact, it is a 4gb card with the last 512mb running slower. nvidia stated the could of just made the 970 a 3gb card but made it a 4gb card with the last 512mb at a slower speed. Your kepler downgrade opinion has been proven false numerous times. In the nvidia section we do not care what brand of video card you own be it amd or nvidia, but do not post FUD in this section.

    Simpler answer:
I have SLI 970s that I would give up for a 980Ti in a heartbeat. If I had the money I would do it right now and work toward 980Ti SLI.

I can agree with that. I would go with 980Ti over 970 SLI if I were upgrading, but OP already has a 970. It may be more cost effective to just get a second 970 over selling on and grabbing a 980Ti. This is a rather subjective decision and there is really no right or wrong answer.

Nah coming from 2 780ti which is about the same gpu power as 970 sli, I would choose 970 sli over every single card out.
