[Titan X] : is my 3y old CPU going to limit it?

I have a old 3970x (i use it on def but can run @5ghz ) and wanna buy a titanx for gaming.

is my old cpu going to limit it also if overclocked?

atm it s not limiting, no differences between 4 and 5 ghz with my current old gpus

yes, 1080p, but 120hz and the upgrade is to try to obtain 100-120 min fps

 

Anywhere near 5GHz and it's fine as everyone else said. With zero competition in the CPU market this is what happens.

 

Even a 4ghz that cpu is just dandy, though I would get a 980ti for 1080 and save a few hundred.

I use a Titan X for 1080p because I want 144fps and high detail levels + AA.

With maxed out detail levels, games will be GPU bound generally but some are also CPU bound at times eg GTA V. For that reason, I overclock my CPU to a good level (4.7ghz).

OP just needs to overclock that CPU, if he can get 5 ghz, it'll be just as fast as a 5820k running at 4.5.

 

4.3 or 4.4 will be fine on the CPU @1080p for a single TitanX

 

For 1080p, I'd just get a 980ti.

I agree, get 980 ti for 1080p, it's better anyways if you overclock it... you save a hundred bucks there, why not? it's free money.

 

A 3970X is plenty good enough for a single TitanX. 980ti or TitanX is the same in some aspects, only the price and the name stands out...Whichever works for you as long as you have the means bro.

 

i see virtually no reason in buying titan x over 980ti, 980ti overclock beats titan x...

 

I would not buy a titan x for 1440p let alone 1080p.

No one should be buying a Titan X, if anything. It has no additional compute performance, has barely a few extra shaders, overclocks worse, sticks to reference designs, and has 12GB of VRAM which is overkill for anything now or in the near future (compared to 6GB which is plenty). If you're buying a Titan X for longevity, and have the money, you're in the wrong mindset, since you're going to be able to afford changing out a 980Ti now for a beefier GPU in the coming years instead of sticking with an aging Titan X.

Basically, the Titan X was dead as soon as the 980Ti dropped.

If you already have a Titan X, fine; you paid the premium and basically still have great performance. It's not like the release of the 980Ti suddenly made the Titan X perform less. But to buy one now over the 980Ti? No.

I generally never express such extreme opinions, but in this case I believe it's warranted.
