AU Optronics 144 Hz Panels will be AMVA

If they can manage 1ms gsync, I will definitely be getting one of these!

 

This could be a good monitor. I HATE bad black levels.

 

A few words on response time:
ALL LCD`s have around 10ms pixel response time. That "1ms gtg" advertised is the fastest color shift (grey to grey) measurement under heavy overdrive. All other color shifts are only worse under that heavy overdrive. And if you even used that much overdrive you would have clearly visible bright inverse ghosting going on. In other words - the advertised response time is 100% worthless info, just like contrast ratio nowadays.

BUT: the three technologies which are in fact GOOD for enjoying motion are:

CRT = 0ms pixel response time for ALL color shifts equally
DLP (projector) = 1ms pixel response time for ALL color shifts equally
OLED = 0.01ms pixel response time for ALL color shifts equally


Since CRT burns eyes and is too small and dead. And since OLED is way too expensive and only available on TVs with lots of bloat that creates massive input lag... (lowest input lag OLED tv out there = 50ms).
The best way to enjoy motion right now is in fact a DLP projector.

 

The Acer Predator 144hz IPS I have now is awesome, with only one negative I've found. That being dark scenes, its just hard to make things out at times, seems a little too dark. I didn't really have this issue with the Asus rog swift.

How are AMVA blacks? Similar to the panel in the Predator? :3eyes:

For those that dont know AU Optronics makes the 144hz displays for Asus, BenQ and others.

 

In terms of pure static contrast ratio (the only contrast ratio spec that actually matters),

all AMVA panels >>>>>>>>>>> TN > IPS

Black levels on AMVA are far far superior and much darker than all IPS panels and yet are still close to them in terms of color accuracy and off-axis viewing angle quality, which is why people want to see 144hz Gsync versions of them so badly.

 

IPS blacks and TN blacks are VERY close. Read that as they are really, really bad compared to VA and are simply not good enough compared.

 

OK thanks, so how do TN, AMVA compare? There must be an average/mean comparison.

If a TN/AMVA panel says 1ms. What's the maximum possible latency in gaming?

After 22 years of using CRT's my eyes are just fine, working/gaming 8h+ every day,no glasses :infinity:
From looking at my friends lcd for 5min my eyes are in tears and not only from bad picture quality
I think they are undead, mine is still kicking at 3.5 years always on and 9 total, sharp as knife, Diamondtron FTW ;D

 

The PB278Q has been using an AUO AMVA panel since being updated. Of course it has a standard refresh rate but the image quality is quite good for the price.

 

Good to know, can't wait for those non-wacky resolutions like 16:9 2k and 4k though!

 

I prefer AMVA panels myself after using my screen for a couple of years (BenQ GW2760HS). Even though it is only 1920x1080, I would prefer this over many other monitors. The two things I wouldn't go without now is flicker-free (non-PWM) backlighting and AMVA panels.

That is not much of an answer but ok.

 

Nothing! It's very much preferable over PWM that even new monitors from other brands are still using. In basic terms, the difference is that the backlight is controlled directly by dimming the LED's. PWM works by switching the LED's on and off very quickly to create a brighter or darker image. Even though this is imperceptible it does seem to make a difference. Flicker-free AMVA panels are very pleasant to look at even for several hours. I don't get sore eyes with it like I have had with other LED monitors.

 

Same here. Had monitors I could not look at for long. Monitor I have now is much better

 

I personally hated the AU Optronics panel in the ROG Swift, but they redeemed themselves with the Predator. AMVA panel contrast is incredible so hopefully they can get some low latency QHD ones. I don't really care for curved monitors or oddball resolutions.
