Hello! My old gtx460 v2 is now dead R.I.P. and I'm about to buy a new Gpu at around 250euros. Some people recomended the gtx960 4gb as the only solution. However they told me that I could give +100euros to get the 970. But my badget is still there, at 250euros ~. What's your opinions? Thanks
Definitely try to reach for 970, its quite a faster card. There is another option, for 250€ you can find custom R9 290's thats fast as 970.
Thanks Undying! R9 290's start at the same price as 970, but even if I could find that custom one, I've heard some bad things about amd cards. That they run at high temperatures, that many games favour nvidia cards and last but not least that they have bad drivers. Are those things true? So no discussion about the 960 4gb at all? If I get the money for the 970, wont it bottleneck with my system? I dont have the newest parts inside
Oc that 920 and 970 will run good. Before anybody mentions it's a 3.5gb card, it has 4gb but the last 512mb runs at a slower speed. Nobody I know has trouble with the 970 vram.
In the site that I'm searching for gpu's it says everywhere that the 970 is 4gb. But yes I've heard from others, crying about having only 3.5gb. If the last 512mb runs at a slower speed as you mentioned, now wouldnt that be a problem for 1440p + gaming?
No, it won't, don't try to max games on that card though at 1440p you will run out of gpu power before vram. Amd "fans" keep bring the vram thing up well as the bogus kepler performance degradation bs too.
The 960 itself isn't as bad a card as people make it out to be, yes it doesn't offer the same performance per buck as the more higher end gtx 970/r9 290/r9 390 but it performs well against other cards in it's price range (i.e 280/280x/285/380). The problem is though the 4GB version has a sort of "premium charge" attached to it, pushing it outside the entry level price range and more into the intermediate price point which for not much more bucks you can get a GPU with at least 4GB that outperforms it twice over. That's why if you want a 4GB card in the entry level bracket R9 380 4GB would be a better deal. Saying that though within that price range you're not going to be pushing settings/resolutions up too high that'll require 4GB. You're still going to end up turning settings down even if your frame buffer is capable of loading higher textures.
They ruined the 960 with the 128bit bus and reference 2gb, chokes the gpu and makes it run like a 760 in several situations, pff even like a 750ti at times. 970 is much better now that the small ones without the unnecessary pcb and hsf are driving the prices down.
The 380 is just a modified 285. Can it even make use 4gb? Or will it sputter in gpu power before vram?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the GTX970. There are several on this forum using them at 1440 for gaming with no issues. As ---TK--- said, just push that 920 a bit and you're set. The GTX970 is well worth the additional cost over the 960. That 4GB on the 960 is a complete waste if you're not going SLI as the GPU can not process data fast enough to make full use of it.
Almost 100% of you guys suggested the 970. You know what, I'm gonna listen to you and try to reach 970! 100more bucks for what, like 40% plus in performance vs the 960? And an other thing, does it matter which 970 model I'll buy? Because the cheapest ones (@370euros) are the Zotac and the Palit one. The more expensive ones are Msi, Strix and some others.
The zotac and Palit are most likely reference models and dont have the zero-rpm feature which turns off the GPU fan under 60 degrees, of course they also have better cooling. That and clock speeds are about the only difference.
I see a windforce 3x cooling system Flex Display Technology(patent-pending) 970 at 367 euros. The zero-rpm feature you mentioned is that "patent-pending" , right?
I dont precisely know what flex is all I know its something about DP-Monitor connection but it has the 0-rpm feature aswell.4
If you want to play modern games without stuttering but decent 30FPS on most of the games, then YES. 2gb its a bad option nowadays because games require 3gb minimum. Remember 4gb its not going to give you boost performance, but you can easily play games with ultra textures with no issues.
I just bought a Gigabyte GTX 960 4GB card. I don't think it is a waste as I game at 1080p and am upgrading from a GTX 660. I bought the GTX 960 4GB on sale for $209 usd with a 10 dollar mail in rebate, making the final cost $199. For $199 dollars, I do not think there is a better card. I could not afford a $300 dollar 970. The R9 380 is a good card, but it lacks Nvidia features like Physx, and is not as power efficient. Do any of you people bashing the GTX 960 even own one? Are you the same people who put down GTX 960 owners in the 960 owner thread? Sure the 970 is better, if you want to spend 100 dollars more money. But then why do that when you can spend 200 dollars more and get a GTX 980. Of course if you buy a GTX 980 your just wasting money cause for 150 dollars more you could have a GTX 980 Ti.
