2 780 Tis vs 1 980 Ti

I currently have 2 780 Ti running SLI, but want to upgrade my cards to the 980 Ti. Can anyone give me an insight to the performance of the 980 Ti vs the 2 780 Tis I'm currently running? I'm just wondering what impact I'll see on my performance if I decide to swap both of my 780 Tis for 1 980 Ti now, and then add a second 980 Ti later. From what I understand, the 980 Tis are faster and have more memory, but would my performance drop if I buy 1 980 Ti for the time being.

Any ideas how these cards compare? Thanks.

personally id go with 1 980ti, its better to get one card because you could overclock it and you wont have to deal with sli problems (trust me ive gone through with it in the past) and you can add another 980ti and have decent ish scaling with great performance

What sli issues have you experienced? Been rocking nvidia sli for 10 years now, not including 3dfx sli. You can oc in sli mode as well, not sure what your on about there?

Depending on your display reso it really could, or not make it for you.

I have been going thru the same question the day the 980Ti came out.
I use a 1200p surround resolution and i dont think it would do the job for me.

I might be misstaking though, in benches which( we don't play at) my system is stronger(with a similar cpu-mobo-ddr system) but

in recent titles i don't know...

poor scaling, games not properly using it (flickering, artifacts), micro stutter etc

 

I have never had any issues.

There aren't many games that don't support sli. Even so, one 780 ti can push games like evil within/wolfenstein old blood 1080p 60 fps.

Every other game that does not support sli are generally easy to run.

Also if people are getting artifacts maybe their gpu is broken or a bad overclock.

 

Well I went from 2x780 sli to one 980ti for awhile before I got my second card, I must say I was really impressed I could amp up game settings that eat up vram and the performance was exactly the same as my sli 780s just with one card, I game at 2560x1440 120hz.

 

I've never had any any problems with SLI ever tbh.

Currently, I'm using 3 monitors (Samsung 4K-primary, 2560x1440 IPS, & 1920x1080).The 4K monitor was my most recent purchase, all the other monitors (including a 1920x1080 sitting on a shelf) are older. After I bought the 4K monitor, I added a 2nd 780 Ti because 1 780 Ti wouldn't run them.

I have a multi-monitor setup mostly for work, I'm not running Nvidia Surround or anything, but I would like to replace my 2 other monitors with 4K monitors so they all match. When it comes to gaming, I use my 4K monitor or I use Gamestream to play on my 4K TV via Nvidia Android TV. From what I've read, 1 980 Ti can run 3 4K monitors by itself, which would be nice.

As far as 980 Tis go, I saw where EVGA is pre-binning their Kingpin cards with a higher ASIC quality, at a premium of course. I don't really think the price premium justifies itself, but I have noticed some other cards, like the Asus Strix, come with pretty high clock rates out of the box. Does anyone have an opinion on brand of card to get or just get the reference card since I plan to watercool it. I just don't want to end up with a dud of the Silicon Lottery starting with a base clock of 1000Mhz and get an OC of 250Mhz bringing my clock speed up to 1250Mhz when I could have bought a Strix, which runs faster out of the box.

I've only had poor scaling in games that didn't have SLI profiles but you can usually find some SLI bits that work and force them with inspector.

 

Well, in his defense, BF4 has current SLI issues in Windows 10. But 1 980ti is enough to get decent FPS even at 4k. I've pretty much been trapped using 1 of my cards since I switched to W10, but I'm okay with that because one is still enough for now and I know it'll be fixed quick enough.

EDIT: And Ark: Survival Evolved (which is the 4th most played game on Steam) doesn't support SLI in any capacity. But again, 1 980ti is still enough.

 

Yet another reason for me not to jump to W10 yet.

 

Sli works fine in windows 10 for me but just played some gta v since I upgraded from windows 7 Saturday . Heaven and valley work fine too. As due the Futuremark benches.

 

yeah i suppose, but many people with high end sli setups in gta 5 during the first month of release got artifacts, when we disabled sli they went away, i had no overcock on my cards, completely stock, the issue did get fixed, i no sli scaling isnt that much of an issue and many games have good scaling but its still something to consider in sli

 

yeah i suppose your right, but ive had issues in sli, not in those benchmarks though, only in one game
