After reading the reviews here at guru3d, I can't really decide..

How does the STRIX perform with higher fan speed?

Do they both have dual BIOS? They seems to overclock pretty good, but would like to know how the STRIX does with a higher fan speed.

    Any recommendations?

+1. I'm definitely a member of the dragon team :) and with the price difference x 2 it makes the decision even easier.

I'd say MSI, not because of any 'dragon team' stuff, but the Asus might have got that nasty 'DigiVRM+' which limits voltages on a hardware level that is very difficult to work around on the 980s for full overclocking possibilities. Wouldn't buy those Asus GPUs a second time because of that...

What if overclocking was not a factor?

I bought a 980TI Gigabyte G1 Gaming, and it's great. Works perfectly, and it's wicked fast. However, it seems there are a decent number of people who have complained about coil whine, so it's a bit of a lottery. I'd either take my chances, or go with MSI.

    Another vote for MSI.

I used to own a pair of Asus GTX970 Strix (now MSI GTX980Ti gaming), wonderful cards, specially with the backplate (MSI didnt have or was extra on later models), but the GTX980 TI Gaming does come with it. The biggest difference i can tell is sound wise, the tone of the MSI fans are less noticeble and need less rpms to keep the card below 80C, that said, the new Asus is a triple fan... so it could be better, still uses the same fans that i personally dont like, so for me its MSI for this gen, and Btw GTX980Ti in SLI is working great with 4k.

Have thought about it, but because of the coil whine, I would not risk it. Owned an HD 7970 from gigabyte years ago, it also suffered from coil whine at high clock speeds. :/

Then it's down to factory clocks, and noise levels. This is basic research, and easily done with cross checking Hilbert's reviews :)

I'm running Asus Strix 980SLI and one of the cards also has coil whine. Had two Gigabyte passive 5770s and one of them also had coil whine, so I guess no manufacturer truely is safe from producing a whining card from time to time these days...

Can't really tell it's not got a second BIOS, but I didn't see a switch there somewhere...

Great! I will go for the MSI this time, just happen to be 50$ off today too, so it made it even easier to choose! :) can't wait!

You're also stressing them pretty decently ;)
Which way are you overclocking? Afterburner or such software or vBIOS mod? Could help a little bit with air of course, or you could just go back to watercooling hehe EKWB got decent blocks I think.
