The thing is you actually aren't going to be able to overclock a 290 to reach that performance. These chips end up being more than just a OC'd 290 due to increased efficiency of moving to GloFlo. I have an XFX R9 290 DD Black Edition, which is factory OC'd with a custom cooler. It hits 94c. These 390X chips save ~30watts and 20-30 degrees over an OC'd 290X. Really the most disappointing thing is it not being GCN 1.2. Aside from that it being a respin is really a non-issue. It competes really well vs the 980, at a lower cost, while being compatible with the most meaningful DX12 functionality. That said it would probably would be more worthwhile for anyone with a 290(X) already to pick up a 2nd at a much lower cost now.

Global Foundries doesn't make these, it's still TSMC. Besides, you can't just switch manufacturers like that. It would require quite a bit of work.

Yeah, the complaints are compared to the 290x.

    Saying that, there is only £20 between a 390x and a 980.

Yeah but if you look at those benches the 290X stays behind man in quite a few games, in 5 as I counted now. (2 fps in witcher 3 but I don't think that counts.. :D).

So 5 out of 9 ... I would suppose that would warrant a purchase of the 390X? :D ... But a 2nd hand 290X might be better after all, and OC the $hit out of it.. I wanna get my hands on one of those Vapor X cards lol. :p

    :D

And if you look at the retail prices of the 290X @ newegg they're less than 100$ cheaper give or take.

You can get some GTX 980 with 3rd party (much better) cooling for around $489 with rebates. It also comes with the new Batman game. Free game or sell it for $25.

The 390x is $429 on sale now. If it was $379 or $399 it would be more appealing but for awhile now, NVIDIA cards just run cooler, more efficient and have MUCH more overclocking headroom.

Its actually in line with what the 8GB 290X are going for, as well as being more efficient and cooler.

amds r7 and r9 series are also coming with new games bundled they showed it in their conference and it still is to be announced.. so thats the same for amd too u can sell the game for 25$ and get rebates also.. no big issue in that what u are pointing out

Well it's not like the 980 or 970 was released today. They been out since September 2014.

That is weak, and the Fury X having only 4GB is weak as well, things are not looking so good for AMD

It's not 4GB of normal memory, it's HBM, it's different.

yes thats the reason that amds drivers are not optimized well right now, wait for sometime and the r9 390x will get more performance out of it.

It doesn't "beat" it. It merely trades blows. If you'll notice some games it's ahead by 2-3 frames, sometimes the 980 is ahead. There is no, 'beating".

Yeah they're pretty much on par, with the 980 being better in 1 more game.

This whole generation has been pretty meh in term of the difference between the mid range and the high end. Looking at overclockers right now in the UK both a 970 and 290X are 280 quid (non reference) whereas the 390X (featured) is 380 and a 980 costs 420 ish.

None of the higher end cards offer anymore than about 10 FPS give or take a few. That's 100 GBP for 10 fps @1440 ... SLI seems to be the obvious choice here, specially since the 970 has great scaling and overclocking (not sure about 290X, was so long ago)

Not if you already own gm204, gk110 or a 290x?
