maybe faster rams on the 290x card would help too and that alone would be enough for a good boost of a few frames
I dought they will find much head room on the core but if they do watch out as some of you know,if you get even 50 -100 more on the core they just fly.
so It could be a crappy refresh like the 9800 gtx/+/250 or a good one like gtx480 to 580gtx....ahhhhhh I guess we will see pretty soon

Really? What games need more than 4GB? I'm playing at that res just fine, Witcher 3 is a beautiful game and only uses 2GB, GTA V only uses 3GB so 4 will be fine for a long while yet.:) For 4K yes you'd want more than that, but not for 1440p.

I'm feeling something like that may be coming around, but I would bet the first gen HBM cards won't be 490's. Maybe 480 or like said before, even 470's.

I think 4GB VRAM will suffice for the games we have now, but I wouldn't get a flagship upgrade to last less than 2 years.

Feels like waiting for more info is better than rushing to grab a 980/Ti/Titan... Just my opinion tho...

    1. The majority of players do not game at 4k as of yet.

    2. DX12 is supposed to be able to combine memory from multiple cards, correct? If that is the case, why would you need more than 4GB per card since a single card is really not up to the task of good fps at 4k anyway?

    3. Both AMD and Nvidia rebrand cards for multiple generations. They have done it for years. why would you think that this time around it would be different?

I'm still rocking 2x 7970 cards. I currently see no reason for me to upgrade besides for power savings.

    My 2 cents:

With development of an all new GPU brand (Fiji) and with all GCN GPUs being DX12 full compliant, why develop all new segment of GPUs with high level of costs?

AMD will inject more power efficiency in all rebrand GPUs, increase some features and voilĂ .

Moving all money to make Fiji GPU the most powerfull hardware to tecnoboys, this make more sense.

Too make money? AMD has an awfully low share of the descrete gpu pie. Currently under 25% this quarter iirc 22.5% I think this quarter.

    Not very surprising...

It is AMD. Nothing weird there, they are desperate right now.

I would at least expect the entire 300 series to be updated to latest GCN and full DX12 support (Tier3). In that case they will not be re-brands

    If not, then kinda disappointing.

Well that sucks that the 390 is going to be a re-branded 8gb version of a 290X. Like WTF AMD. I expected at least 2 cards with the HBM configuration. This is bloody ridiculous.

Also is there going to be a r9 380X card at all?

No wonder they've waited until Summer to launch these...they wanted to make sure there are enough crickets to chirp at them as they pull the curtains.

I think 300 series will not sell as well, i think AMD might never have their own 970.
Nothing can beat 970 sales it seems, who knows.

Always been rooting for the red team but between rebrands of rebrands and poor (read zero in the past 6 months) driver support, I'm kind of glad I got rid of my CF setup (upgrade aside since I was actually waiting on the 3xx series and felt uneasy about switching to nvidia due to being an impatient child).

4K setups still require at least x2 GPUs to perform, so going xfire will yield 8GB of total memory and that should be plenty for the latest and greatest. It'll be interesting to see what DX12 and HMB combined will be capable of.

Sure they can just use the 285 and give it 4GB.

    No thanks...

Not impressed with the R9 380 losing massive amount of memory bandwidth. Think I will stick with my HD7950s until the R4XX.

    :lmaa:

Edit: Especially since the HD7XXX will be T3 DX12 compatible.

Welp, this product launch is dead now. Nvidia doesn't even have to do anything. It's really unfortunate, honestly. AMD just keeps falling short of the mark. I know they can put a good product out, but it's always too late to matter.

Well going by the past, they aint exactly good with launches anyway. From the soft launch of the 7000 series in freaking December 2011 of all months. What company in their right mind would soft launch a product in December, effectively saying do not buy our current line up this holiday season The 290, 290x all launched with the awful stock coolers. They will no doubt do something else wrong this time around.
