I use 980 sli and to get good smooth movement like you ask make sure in game you have no frame limit on. Weather that be 30 or 60 make sure it's off in the in game menu. So set that to unlimited. Also then use Vsync in game and leave nvidia control panel alone.

    Thank you for the suggestion.

After posting, I went back and read the PC Gamer post about this.

I already have Afterburner and RTSS installed, so I set the framelimiter to 60 within that, turned off Vsync in driver and in game, and turned off frame limit in game.

I am finding it FAR better now. I still get a couple moments here and there where its not pinned to 60, and its obvious when it isnt, but its definitely much better.

I still feel like I should be able to pin this to 60 without any drops.. heres hoping sli performance improves with this game over time

All they've done is set a negative LOD bias. Patch 1.04 adds a new entry for setting negative lod, on Ultra it's set to -1.0.

No new textures or effects unfortunately.

Well the choppy cutscenes are back for me after this patch. I went back into the visuals file to check if the settings I changed prior had reverted back and saw nothing had changed. Does anyone know of anything else I can try?

How much of a performance hit is that?

Doktor since you seem to know your ****, want to ask you a quick question instead of starting a thread....could you briefly explain to me how and why AFR mode gives me all teh FPS...
And why don't we actually see this type of utilization and performance on default mode with properly optimized drivers ?

I'm getting literally up too and over 100% performance increase over default crossfire mode depending on where I am on the map.
For example walking around in the country side forest with default where I was getting around 70-80 fps, with AFR I am getting 170fps +.... like seriously wtf...
and Novigrad walking around default is around 50-60fps, and AFR mode 80-100+fps

I'm not an expert, but from my limited understanding normal crossfire profiles dont give us frames and almost 100% gpu utilization that AFR gives us, so please explain to me how AFR does this, and why can't they find a way to give us the AFR framerates minus the flickering

I know what you mean. Once back when I still attended a 2 year school we had a lab day, and during the lab we had to press a key to complete a step during the lab. I said something along the lines of, "Just press the any key." and my lab partners looked at me and laughed. Later on, over the course of our time there it became a bit of a running joke

yeah i know, it started even more to run like crap when you reach Velen. Actually i had some drops to 18fps i think. I've read that they are working on a patch but it seems that the PC version has all the attention due to the downgrade scandal. But at least it's not as bad as on the xbox one, it runs even worse and people are complaining that the saves are getting corrupt very often.

I don't think they're neglecting the consoles. It's just that the patch validation process takes much longer, as it has to go through Sony and Microsoft as well.

Also, this game is clearly pushing the consoles to their max..

Well, yeah it is slower than the 970, and like I said it does drop under 40 at night and in deep forest so still not very smooth.

I played about one hour with it enabled and it hovers around 38-40 outside cities, etc.

I quess I was to overhyped yesterday, and only stayed in the city buying/selling stuff :D.

Still, I am very impressed with my laptop, I only had full desktop gaming pc since I can remember.

hey doktor, I saw the settings, and it uses 4 shadow cascades, and 8 texture mips.

So if we use 0 mips (i.e. full texture quality of object in view) can it reduce pop-ins?

This game honestly is worse than ACU when it comes to pop-ins. Walk around novigrad, and suddenly a bunch of 3~6 guard pops in a bunch and literally stand there do nothing. ACU had huge crowds, so you could ignore some of the pop-ins.

Same with shadows, I see a much more defined shadow line literally drawing in front of me as I WALK.

Any settings I can fine tune?

Thank you, this also allowed me to use this as a search value in Process Explorer to find a few more settings not part of the config file already. :)
(They are all for the streaming category.)

tbh i don't think it pushes the PS4 to max. Maybe the xbox one but not even that. As far as i know the consoles are still limited and dev's can't use the hardware at full capacity, they need this consoles to last at leas 3 years more and to be capable of graphics improvement.
The engine is crap, it was developed for PC's and ported to consoles when Witcher 2 got released. And the only improvement they made is the fact that the engine is now capable of open world.
