IPC improvement from 2nd to 4th generation in somewhere between 5-10% at best depending on load. If OP happens to be in CPU bound situation he may find that expensive i7-4770k gives like 6% fps boost in games. 98% of games will perform on 2600k vs 4770k exactly same on 4.5GHz. As that gives performance above what games today need unless OP gets very strong multi GPU setup. There is quite higher improvement in memory dependant situations as 4th generation has considerably higher memory throughput. (not games, just very few special applications) And if multi GPU setup is in question, then another difference between 2nd and 4th gen which may matter is PCIe 2.0 vs 3.0, that gives in games up to 4% difference in 2-way SLI/CF. As he can have 2600k for free, I say, it is good upgrade over 1st gen i5.

on the Corsair web page it says the max height for a cooler is 150mm, which is a tad too low for a 160mm high cooler :nerd:
Right, better find one test when you're not gpu bound to the max. Just saying, or when in future you get stronger gpus. :infinity: I did say clock vs clock and I had i7 2700k and 4770k in mind there, guess I should have said that. @ OT going from i5 750 to i7 2600k will be a good upgrade, so go for it, especially if its free.

Running my 2500k with CM Hyper612S It does the job good...but i think you can get cheaper and equally performing 'less huge' air coolers (it does look impressive in there though....but check your chassis b4 buying, i had to cut in my old one to fit it And just to chime in...25/26/27's K lovely cpu's
3rd and 4th gen i7 are hot nasty things. I wouldn't even want one for free, no joke. It's like Intel made this godlike chip in the 4770K and saw the overclocking potential and thought sh1t! We're going to have to do something about this. I can't be jiving with a purposely compromised central processing unit. Intel, come back when you're serious. 2600k is the promised land for the time being.
My i7 2600k is still going strong despite being 3-4 years old and overclocked 24/7 to 4.7Ghz... Excellent chip especially if you're given one for free! As others have already said, go buy a decent Z68 motherboard and start overclocking that beast of a cpu!
I had both the 4770k and the 4790k at home. In the end, I went back to my old trusty 2600k as I didn't see any performance improvements. The newer platforms were nice, but too much trouble for me to overclock (and running extremely hot), so I saved myself the hassle. The performance difference in games would be ~5% at best and it's rather hard to get the same clocks from the older CPUs out of the newer ones.
