NVIDIA talks about Pascal - Will be fast and has 3D Stacked Memory

This is quite wrong.

While GPU performance has been increasing fast, the pipe that feeds data to GPUs has not kept up.
Supercomputers today rely on a technology called PCI Express to connect GPUs to CPUs.
That’s a technology you can find in the desktop and notebook computers you use right now.
It’s fast, but not fast enough.

NVLink, the world’s first high-speed GPU interconnect, offers a faster alternative.
NVLink will let data move between GPUs and CPUs five to 12 times faster than they can today.

Big deal about NVLINK is both speed and unified memory.
I don't know if they can/will decouple it from NVlink

 

Well this unified memory sounds alot like DX12 exclusive feature to combine memory or am I wrong?


Also wont Pascal be pcie4.0? That is already 16 GT/s bit rate vs 8 GT/s bit rate by pcie3.0, should be enough for sure.. Even pcie3.0 is if we compare it with pcie2.0 - minimal difference by single/dual gpus @ reasonable resolutions.


Imho this nvlink looks more like a special boost for those scientific calculations where every bit counts.

 

You will not see it in normal PC's any time soon. It's meant for those super computers where you need zillion GPU's working together in parallel. They could maybe use it in dual-GPU cards but that's about it. Currently only some future PowerPC CPU's will support NVlink. Also if I remember correctly, Nvlink required really fancy connector (and I'm almost 100% sure that it's not practical enough to replace SLI connector - size is probably one issue).

People should keep in mind that the whole presentation was NOT aimed towards gamers.

AMD And Hynix give us HBM Technology right now.
And 10x Faster? funny and 32GB? 4GB to max 16GB HBM is enough for Next-Gen in 5K

I think I see more wood screws in Nvidia's future. This card will be well over 1000$ if it ever comes out.

What I wrote is not wrong, your picture is for servers. Consumers can't expect AMD/intel to implement something what will increase manufacturing price of their APUs/CPUs just for benefit of nVidia.

 

The only thing I want to know: Is it feature level 12.x ? That's all that interests me as a gamer.

 

Of course Pascal will be at least dx12.0. Probably 12.1, but that I wouldn't dare to say.

 

Back in 2000 I had the latest and greatest video card of the time it was a Radeon 9800 Pro with 128k memory.
I remember in early 2002 the 256k model of this card showed up and a tech journo in PC Authority Magazine exclaiming there would never be any conceivable use for 256k of vram, this card was around $600AU for by todays standards, minuscule performance even if measured by say an ATI A10, A8, or A6, APU.
It ran Source at full specs for 1280 x1024 with x4 aa. A category killer for Halflife 2.
My next card was an NVidia 8800 it had truly outstanding performance ran Crysis 2nd level down with x2aa on a 1920 x 1080 at 35fps. Cost a staggering $700+AU
Now you can buy a card for $100 that will do that.
Now have an EVGA GTX980.

Took longer than I thought for SHD (4k) to come. I predict within 3yrs it will all be about 4k+ gaming with the other even higher resolution screens also being slowly adopted.

We are in the early days of 4k, the public don't know much and many don't yet care. Only content will justify the upgrade for Joe Public.
