First thing I thought when I read the headline: 'You've got to be sh*tting me.'

Samsung has a problem with it's drive's firmware as it seems, which obviously doesn't work well on the 840 evo, and now the 850 pro... this only makes me think I should better go with something else when I buy the next SSDs, probably Cruicial.

Most likely not, since it uses a different hardware and firmware.

Absolutely right, upgrading various CRITICAL (!!!) things has become WAY too easy. I've seen it a couple of times in our shop too.

You have to remember a few years ago Samsung was a minor player in SSDs, OCZ and Intel were the big boys. Intel managed to stay fairly clean, mostly because their products were lackluster and a bit pricey. OCZ got totally tarnished because they tried to be cutting edge without the resources to keep it reliable. Now Samsung is running into problem after problem (840 EVO performance loss that can't be fixed, drives bricking in update, RAPID mode OS loss) now that they are the biggest boy on the block. The issue isn't that all these companies are terrible at what they do, the issue is the scale of the user base. When you operate on a massive scale there are so many different variables possible and no beta can expose the nearly infinite number of variables in the user base.

Why the heck do you update? Tell me why? If you have a compatibility problem, ok, do it. But if you don't why do you do it? Because it scratches you in the butt? Because you have too much free time?

There's no reason to update SSD firmware if you're not experiencing an issue that the firmware was intended to correct.

my 256GB 850 Pro is fine after the firmware update. I ran the benchmark thing in Samsungs software 3 times before and after the update and actually gained an average 15MB/s seq read, 10MB/s seq write, and around 3000 IOPS to both random read and write.

unlike users who did have their drive die I use a $50 HDD for my OS and software that update at least once a month. I have defraggler to keep the drive running at 185MB/s.

So this means that the most reliable SSD´s are the ones from Intel???

The second I pressed the Update button I knew I made a mistake.
    2 mistakes!

    1. Using firmware Update directly in Magician, instead of downloading and executing it externally as standalone.
    2. Upgrading firmware in the 1st place

    So why I did it?
Upgrade button was there, it was too easy, I didn't put any thought into it.

    same here :)

    Exactly

Exactly, what the Frak with these people? It's not like a video driver, you don't need to upgrade your hard drive firmware unless for example, they are adding a feature like support for a special chipset option on the particular motherboard you have or TRIM is being added or something important like that. Otherwise, you update and it goes bad on you, no sympathy, you were asking for it, go cry somewhere else.
